As you probably have heard by now, you did it! Because of your passion, your willingness to show up, send emails, make phone calls, and speak out at all levels of our school system and local government, we just landed a historic win for all NYCPS students!

• No 1:1 screens for 2K-2

• No student-facing AI for 2K-8

• AI components disabled on 38 apps

• Recommended 30 mins of 1:1 screen time for 3-5

• Recommended 45 mins of 1:1 screen time for 7-8

• Limited AI use in H.S., including 5 pilot programs

There is, of course, still more work to do–extending the moratorium past one year, ensuring the policy’s loopholes don’t allow AI to sneak in to schools, expanding it to high school, and reforming the city’s contracts process so that we don’t give public money to Big Tech– but this is a milestone and a testament to the power of parent organizing. Save the date! On Tuesday, September 15th, the City Council Committee on Oversight & Investigations will be hosting a hearing on the DOE’s Screen Time and Digital Devices starting at 1:00 p.m. We will send out info about submitting testimony and a rally ahead of time. Until then, plan to come and bring friends! The more people we turn out, the more the DOE knows that we will not be backing down. Please start mobilizing your networks to show up now.
