Agent tokens have users. Few have paying customers.

We lined up the eight agent protocols we rate on one question: does anyone outside the project pay for what it does? Virtuals scores 16 of 25 on revenue. Nobody else clears 10. Elsewhere, Bittensor handed each subnet owner control of its own emission split, and four of them took the maximum within hours.
What shipped this week
Bittensor's subnet owners now set their own cut. A runtime upgrade on 19 October 2026 replaced the fixed split (18% to the owner, 41% each to validators and miners) with one each owner chooses: up to 33% for themselves, at least 33% for miners. Within hours four owners took the full 33% and one cut theirs to 10%, while 121 of 128 subnets kept the old default. The change went in through Bittensor's sudo key, one 2-of-3 multisig, and a split can now move without a network vote, so check yours if you stake into a subnet. Bittensor review
IoTeX now pays voter rewards from the protocol itself. The Zanzibar upgrade activated on 19 October 2026 at block 53,533,081, moving staking-reward payouts from an off-chain service called Hermes into the chain's own rules. Holders no longer depend on that service to get paid. The proposal behind it, IIP-59, still reads Draft, and IoTeX's last Snapshot vote was in October 2024. IoTeX review
Render proposed an AI gateway paid in RENDER. RNP-024, a draft posted on 16 October 2026, would launch Forth, built by OTOY: one endpoint for private hardware, Render GPUs and frontier models, paid in RENDER or USDC on Solana, or by card. It asks for up to 500,000 RENDER in usage incentives over 12 months, from existing Foundation resources. Spend on outside models can't all be burned, since those providers must be paid, so how much reaches the burn is left to a method the Foundation will publish later. RNP-024
Who pays the agents?
Revenue Sustainability is the heaviest dimension in our Returns score. It asks whether outside customers pay for the service, whether they keep paying, and whether that money could cover incentives without new tokens. Emissions count as a cost here. These are the eight protocols in our agent category, scored out of 25:
Virtuals, 16. A launchpad on several chains that takes a 1% fee on agent-token trades, plus creation and inference fees. Its trailing-year revenue is still falling, and it slipped a point in September. None of the fees it keeps reach VIRTUAL holders.
Fetch.ai / ASI Alliance, 10. Working products, but no public usage or revenue figure for ASI:One, ASI Cloud, the SingularityNET marketplace or Agentverse.
Warden, 8. Revenue is self-reported. The buy-and-burn holders voted for last week isn't on chain yet.
Olas, 5. Agents run and transact on chain, but lifetime marketplace turnover sits in the low six figures, and the fee burn has never burned OLAS.
OpenServ, 3. No revenue we can verify, and adoption claims that shrank when we checked them.
ElizaOS, 2. A popular open-source framework with no revenue model for its token.
Giza, 2. Its two earning products were retired in March 2026, and we read zero fees over 30 days in September.
Openmind, 2. Funded by its raise, not by customers.
Agents are the sector that markets itself on activity: transactions, deployments, agent counts. Little of that turns into fees anyone outside can see. Virtuals, the exception, earns mostly from people trading agent tokens, and agents doing paid work barely registers anywhere. Each score links to its evidence on the review pages. Biggest movers this week
7-day change as of 20 October 2026.
Only 10 of the 41 tokens we track closed the week up. Heurist, last week's biggest gainer, led the fallers. NuNet and ORA stay off the list again: so little trades that their quotes are stale.
Gainers:
Nillion (NIL) +23.0%
Phala Network (PHA) +10.9%
Venice (VVV) +10.7%
IoTeX (IOTX) +8.6%
Sentient (SENT) +8.4%
Fallers:
Heurist (HEU) -28.3%
Morpheus (MOR) -17.7%
Openmind (ROBO) -17.5%
Cookie DAO (COOKIE) -16.7%
Grass (GRASS) -15.7%

What we verified this week
Eleven re-checks across six projects since 16 October, and no score moved. The sharpest:
Morpheus's AMD privacy check passed anything until 14 October. Morpheus's own v7.15.0 release notes say any SEV-SNP measurement cleared the host check before that version. We added it to the review, and re-ran our own check on the TEE provider's new host: it passes.
Akash's biggest customer is spending less. The largest payer's share of demand fell from nearly three-quarters to about half, because its own spend more than halved while everyone else held flat. That share is now tracked live on the review.
Akash's low provider count isn't a record. We had called it the lowest in network history. The Console's history shows 2023 ran lower, so the first quarter of 2026 was the weakest since then.
AkashML's reported usage holds up. OpenRouter's settled token counts bear out what Akash reported for May to July.
DeFiLlama shows Bittensor's chain TVL as zero. Its chain page reads nothing, so we now sum the protocol figures it does list.

On the watchlist
Whether more Bittensor subnet owners raise their cut. We re-read every subnet's split.
Whether RNP-024 goes to a vote, and what share of Forth's revenue reaches the burn.
Akash Proposals 343 to 345, which close on 21 October. Together they ask the community pool for about 1.5 million AKT of engineering funding.
Allora's November vesting cliff. It could lift circulating supply by roughly two-thirds.
Whether Warden deploys the contract that holds its 2 billion cap. Until we can read it on Base, WARD stays listed as uncapped.
