Outro, “Broken Promise” EP

Hi everyone,

What a time huh? Amidst the darkness, there’s a smidge of light: Last month Outro released our “Broken Promise” EP.

We’re really proud of this record. Adam, Noam, Peter, and I started playing together in the summer of 2021 and we clicked right away, in part because we’d played with each other in various band configurations and jam sessions over the years. We stuck to it, playing shows, writing more songs, recording The Current in summer of 2022.

Immediately after finishing that session, I starting writing the songs that would end up on this new EP. They were influenced by stories I’d heard about my family and families like it, the ghastly situation faced by migrants and refugees around the world, and the anxiety of what the future holds.

The music and the lyrics share a certain immediacy. Noam’s drums propel us forward, Peter’s winding bass keeps the groove, and Adam’s guitar and vocal harmonies bring the melody. Engineer Justin Pizzoferato captured the exact sound we were going for: A Steve Albini-esque, mid-90s Chicago kind of vibe.

It all works and I’m grateful that people have noticed. Rosy Overdrive, the indie music blog, gave the record a rave review:

Broken Promise is worth checking out for its opening track, “Fool”, alone–it’s one of the best things I’ve heard this year so far, easily. It’s impossibly cool-sounding, sometimes like a chill explosion and other times like running water. Everything is positioned perfectly, from the roaring opening guitar riff to the rat-a-tat drums to the split-second bass spotlight to the rolling melodic guitars that eventually take over the track to Levy and Zucker’s harmonies in the brief refrain.

“Impossibly cool”! There’s nothing sweeter to these middle-aged ears.

I encourage you to take a listen yourself. You can find “Broken Promise” wherever you stream your music: Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.

If you purchase the EP on Bandcamp, not only do you get that tingly feeling of actually supporting a band, but you’ll get a real, live seven-inch single in the mail:

The Villages and New Home single, with an early 20th century painting of an Ottoman man in a synagogue.
The “Villages/New Home” 7” single

I’ve got a few of these at home and I can attest that they look and sound great. Collector’s items, even.

Thanks for listening. More shows soon.

Josh
