The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong - Amy Morin
Becoming mentally strong all comes down to controlling and organising your daily habits. And this all begins in the mind and in our belief systems.
3 Types of Destructive Beliefs:
Unhealthy beliefs about ourselves
- Self-pity
- Magnifying your misfortune
- “Why me?”
These ways of thinking keep us stuck. They keep us focused on the problem rather than on the solution.
Unhealthy beliefs about others
- Others have power and control over you
- Giving others your power and energy
- Thinking we need to accept negative people
We do not need to submit to others, we have the will to make our own decisions and choices and to say “yes” or “no” whenever we want.
Unhealthy beliefs about the world
- The world owes us something
- The world is against us
- Life isn’t fair
It is so easy for us to assume that if we work hard, then the world will owe us success, but this can lead to disappointment, as it doesn’t always work this way.
Do things because you enjoy the craft or activity, rather than searching for success.
The only person you should compare yourself to is the person that you were yesterday.
The secret to mental strength is to get rid of bad, negative habits with good, healthy ones.
How to replace bad habits with healthy habits:
Unhealthy beliefs come around because we are uncomfortable with our feelings. Feeling sad, hurt, angry, or scared are all uncomfortable feelings that we try to avoid. We try to escape it by doing things like feeling self-pity and indulging in bad habits. And although it is a temporary distraction, it just prolongs the pain.
The only way to deal with these emotions is to go through them, to feel sad, and then to move on.
As you build the resilience to withstand these difficult emotions, bit by bit, you will notice yourself finding the resilience to reject negative habits and to implement more positive ones. One small brick at a time.
“Before you can change your world, you have to believe that you can change it.”
