#1. remixes

First and foremost we got a couple hot remixes, one of a lovely reggaeton track, and one of a… new wave disco punk? song by a great Chinese band.

The first remix is of Telenovela by Isabella Lovestory, off of her excellent album Vanity from last year. The second is of 神秘的香波 (Mystical Shampoo) by 新裤子 (New Pants), from 2006. I really like how they both turned out!

I’m currently separated from all of my music gear (sad) and have been reduced to making music using only a computer. But that does lend itself well to doing remixes.

I love the vocals and lyrics of both of these songs so re-imagining the music underneath them was super fun. The New Pants song “Mystical Shampoo” is about a woman who moves from the countryside to the city to start a beauty salon. She does it all: hair dye, perms, extensions, massages, shampoo. But there’s something mysterious about the place because everyone who goes there experiences a kind of love ecstasy, leading to some very orgasmic vocal stylings which we always love (see: Prince).

#2. rhythms

Next I point you to rhythms.otherdimensional.club and we will get a tad nerdy. This is a site I made (the code is open source) where you can create and experiment with Euclidean rhythms. I’ll get into the details but tl;dr: use this site to make cool beats.

A Euclidean rhythm uses an algorithm to generate a repeating pattern made up of a number of rhythmic "hits" that are as evenly distributed as possible over a number of "steps". So for example, given 3 hits and 8 steps, the resulting pattern would be:

X . . X . . X .

Where X is a hit and . is no hit i.e. silence.

The pattern repeats in a loop forever, so it doesn’t matter where you start it. For example if you started from the last “hit” in the example above, the (3, 8) pattern above could also be written as:

X . X . . X . .

It turns out that this method can describe all kinds of traditional folk rhythmic patterns from around the world. This paper explains that for example (2,7) is the rhythm of the Macedonian Lesnoto dance and that (3,5) is a thirteenth century Indian tala called Caturthaka.

Back to the site I made, which looks like this:

It supports creating up to 6 simultaneous Euclidean rhythms, where you can customize the hits, steps, and starting point to trigger a whole bunch of samples I included. See what you can make!

Here are two beats I made quickly using this tool, as well as the values I used for hits, steps, and starting point. In each audio clip I bring parts of the beat in and out to show how each new pattern affects the rhythmic feel.

Does that make sense?? I hope so, well the best way to make sense of it is just to give it a shot I think…
