Back to today's topic!
As we climb the ladder, it becomes an essential part of our role to be an example for the rest of the people in our organization.
In the future, think that part of leadership is caring and coaching your teammates.
Care for your teammates
The critical aspect of caring about your teammates is learning to meet them where they are with empathy. Sometimes, people need praise, other direction, or feedback.
Showing up and caring for your teammates will make them do the same and care about their job.
Caring is engaging with them, understanding their strengths and interests, and how to leverage all this with the work at hand.
Example of Engagement
When you're the leader or the most senior in the room, people will look at how you engage with everyone. You have to show positivity and passion and be an example they can follow.
I've seen this play out at work when people ask themselves: "What would Oscar do in this situation?" not only with me but with past leaders of the organization, who have left but left a mark.
Good Follower
Leadership requires followers, and from that perspective, we're leaders because our teammates trust us to do our work in the team's service.
Leaders who are perceived as another one of the team "working with us" tend to have good follower skills. You're not above the work. You're part of the team.
Conclusion
In the past, I've seen these characteristics being described as Servant Leadership. A servant leader focuses on the rest of the team's growth, well-being, and empowerment.
