Opera Contempo is accepting virtual auditions for our upcoming workshop of three scenes from a new opera at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, performing late July 2026-early August 2026

AUDITION CALL for excerpted scenes from “This is Jane”, a new opera in the works by composer Angela Elizabeth Slater and librettist Kendra Preston Leonard. This project will be performed at the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival at MadKing Fellowship Theater, with approximately 6 performances between the last weekend of July 2026 and the first weekend of August 2026. Rehearsals will be held at MadKing Fellowship Theater beginning July 2, 2026 on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, with additional rehearsals leading up to performance.

Synopsis of This is Jane:
It all begins with a phone call. When a pregnant student seeks an illegal abortion in 1965, it leads to the creation of one of the most important activist groups of all time: the Jane Collective, Chicago’s revolutionary underground abortion service. "This is Jane" tells the story of the Collective through the lives of those who were part of it as patients, volunteers, staff, and practitioners, drawing on interviews, memoirs, and historical sources, and testifies to the continuing need for reproductive rights.

Note: Solo roles will be paid $340. Chorus roles (including Anna and Nora) will be paid $140.

Available roles: (unless otherwise noted, all roles are open to all ethnicities)

CICI (mezzo), a woman in her late 30s to late 40s. Calm, dedicated, down-to-earth. She has a dry sense of humor. A mom of three. A cancer survivor and a cancer patient at the time of the action. The leader of Jane.

ROSIE (soprano), a woman in her mid to late 20s. Organized, professional, thoughtful, take-charge. Tidy and neat. A social worker who gets an abortion through Jane, joins the group, and becomes CICI's right-hand woman.

LAINIE (alto), a woman in her 50s-70s. No-nonsense butch. No makeup, prefers jeans and tees with feminist, lesbian, or other “radical” slogans on them.

KATE (soprano), a white woman in her 50s-60s. Easy-going, persuasive, very well-dressed. A wealthy socialite who has gotten involved with liberal causes. She raises money for Jane and oversees induced miscarriages.

ELLEN (soprano), a woman in her mid to late 20s or early 30s. Eager, anxious, not very sophisticated. While she's eager to volunteer, she ultimately can't cope with the hard realities of unwanted pregnancies or the decisions the Jane leaders make, and leaves the group.

ANNA (mezzo), a black woman, sings in the chorus and has solo lines

NORA (mezzo or contralto) sings in chorus and has solo lines

Proceeds beyond the production expenses will be donated to Planned Parenthood of Utah
