openwashdata news 16 - celebrations

openwashdata news

We have a lot to celebrate at the end of 2024. Not only is it the holiday season for many of you, but we have also closed the year with some achievements. The next issue of openwashdata news is scheduled for the beginning of February. We are wishing you all happy holidays.

Data

We published seven additional datasets in the past two months, closing the year with 26. Learn more about our new datasets on their dedicated websites:

  • watercostaccra - https://openwashdata.github.io/watercostaccra: Household water costs and coping strategies data from metropolitan Accra
  • breathablepitlat - https://openwashdata.github.io/breathablepitlat: Dataset about experiments of field application of breathable laminate-lined pit latrines
  • choleramalawi - https://openwashdata.github.io/choleramalawi: Tracks the progress of Cholera epidemic in Malawi (2022-23)
  • unhcrwash - https://openwashdata.github.io/unhcrwash: WASH Data From Refugee Camps and Settlements (UNHCR)
  • worldhdi - https://openwashdata.github.io/worldhdi: Human Development Index Worldwide 1990-2022 (2024)
  • wsabrazil - https://openwashdata.github.io/wsabrazil: Wastewater management and household infrastructure in Brazil

washr R package

Over the past two years, we have invested much time into publishing data as R data packages. We started with 100s of bullet points to document every step to reach the final product, the curated website for each data package. With washr our goal is to automate this process, streamline templates, and significantly reduce the time it takes to publish a dataset. Our first release does precisely that. We are proud that it is available through the official Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN), so that it can installed with the command: install.packages("washr"). In the next step of development, we will adapt the package to apply to a context outside of openwashdata so that it can be used by anyone wanting to publish a dataset using R data packages.

Hackathon

On 28th November 2024, we hosted our second hackathon. Instead of developing R data packages, we asked participants to use our data and prepare a data story. We were impressed by the creativity and the variety of presented stories.

  • 1st prize: Prerna Prasad
  • 2nd prize: James Halonyere
  • 3rd prize: Benton Otieno

National Prize in Switzerland

We have been awarded the National Open Research Data Prize 2024 by the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences for our work on openwashdata. The prize recognizes Swiss researchers at all career levels for innovative practices in open research data. This year's call targeted projects that emphasize collaborative and/or interdisciplinary reuse of research data and/or implement educational or outreach activities related to research data reuse. Contributor of the Month

Our contributor of the month is Laís Freitas Moreira dos Santos for her work on wastewater management and household infrastructure in Brazil. Laís has published the wsabrazil dataset after she participated in our "data science for openwashdata" course in 2023. Thank you for working with us!
