☀️ In this newsletter, we celebrate our first-ever openwashdata hackathon, 20 graduates from our first "data science for openwashdata" course, and a mathematician's internship experience in WASH.
On June 21st, openwashdata successfully hosted the first data package hackathon. Six data enthusiasts gathered in Zurich to work on diverse WASH datasets from countries like Malawi 🇲🇼, Uganda 🇺🇬, Brazil 🇧🇷, Peru 🇵🇪, and Ghana 🇬🇭. In a hands-on session, Mian Zhong introduced the participants to the openwashdata workflow of data package development. Within just 8 hours, every participant delivered an impressive data package.

Congratulations! By completing a capstone project, we have 20 graduates for our first "data science for openwashdata". The capstone projects are fully reproducible, and all data and code for analysis are shared through GitHub. The project report shows which competencies the participants have gained in R, the tidyverse and Quarto and their ability to apply these skills to real-world problems. The projects cover diverse WASH topics with data from various regions and sources.
