Full Speed Ahead!!!
Open Thoughts
Ok! So I have some updates & I’ll try and make this quick (and not poetic). Dang… it might be hard.
This Wednesday at 6:30 CT, I am presenting on a topic near and dear to my heart, “Craft as Resistance: Strategies for Keeping Craft Alive in Cultures Under Threat,” through a research program called TANDA.
This week, we will explore the questions: How do we keep craft traditions alive when the cultures they are connected to are under attack? In what ways can craft serve as a tool of resistance? We are gonna be looking at this from all sorts of angles! 90 degrees, obtuse, acute, and back around to be 360! This event is open to the public! Here is a link if you want to come & join the discussion: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/84768581005

I am also currently working on two very, very large sonic sculptures. (Whenever I say this, people automatically think of Sonic the Hedgehog.) And sadly, it is not Sonic the Hedgehog themed. Carlos Zarate composed a piece for these objects to be activated & and Duo Riso will be performing with them on May 25th at 8:30 pm at Constellation! Here is the event link: https://www.seetickets.us/event/frequency-series-presents-duo-riso/644691
(p.s. it’s also livestream-able)
The work explores the question: If your home could speak to you, what would it say? I made the work while I had a studio in a basement with many exposed pipes connecting to the upstairs apartment. After a year, I had memorized my neighbors’ shower times and bowel movements just by listening to the pipes. I started thinking about these pipes as a continuation of the digestive system, and every part of the home as a bodily function manifested as architecture. I’m curious who lived here before and what they imbued in a space so closely tied to our body systems.

That’s it for now! Here are some quotes that have strengthened me recently. I hope you find strength in them, too.
“ We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art - the art of words.” - Ursula K. LeGuin
“…it is easy to acknowledge that humans are composed of various material parts (the minerality of our bones, or the metal of our blood, or the electricity of our neurons). But it is more challenging to conceive of these materials as lively and self-organizing rather than passive or mechanical means under the direction of rather than something nonmaterial, that is, an active soul or mind.” - Jane Bennett, Vibrant Matter
"That in you which recognizes madness as madness (even if it is your own) is sanity, is the arising awareness, is the end of insanity." - Eckhart Tolle
“You can only have one Birthday present - Life
Some people live a whole life without making this discovery
Green is a color of Life
My highest wish is that my Love is this color..” - Moki Cherry
Loads of fertile green love,
Christina
