Newsletter #5 - Specialist Forums & Foundations Corrected
I left social media years ago. Didn't like who I became on it. The only medium I’m still on is the horrible, horrible LinkedIn, which remains a professional necessity. But last week, two forum invitations arrived which made me happy and simply couldn't be resisted: NOTATIO and VI-CONTROL.
NOTATIO is professional engravers discussing slur attachment, beam angles, spacing rules – the printed page in microscopic detail. VI-CONTROL is composers working with orchestral mockups and playback humanization. Both are exactly where Ooloi discussions belong as those phases approach.
The NOTATIO response included a fair criticism: the blog was "all in computerese". True enough. The technical posts document invisible machinery because that's what the work has been. But it prompted On Feeling like THE Donald.
Starting on rendering exposed a structural problem. The piece hierarchy was backwards for visual formatting. Flipping Staff→Voice→Measure to Staff→Measure→Voice touches about 40 files but makes the model honest. Details in Taking Measure.
That's what the next week is for.
