onewayness news (March 2017): announcing EMBRAL, new releases, upcoming events...
View this email in your browser (|ARCHIVE|) Hiya friends.
Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here. Life is skittles and life is beer. Etc etc.
Lots afoot in my world to tell you about, so let’s get into it.
ANNOUNCING EMBRAL! Charles Shriner (dRachEmUsiK) and I have been playing music together since 2012. We’ve done three studio albums together, a handful of EPs, and dozens of live performances. But we’re not (and never have been) me in my solo bubble next to Charles in his, as our past naming conventions somewhat suggest. We’re a band of the two of us. And going forward, we wanted a name that reflects that. So, I’m still onewayness, and he’s still dRachEmUsiK, but now together we are embral.
We’re going to continue to do the thing we do, just under a new name and visual identity. We’ve got a nice little website happening at embral.org, and have hung out our shingle on the various social media outposts. So, do us a solid, and go like us on Facebook (http://facebook.com/embralmusic) , and follow us at @embralmusic on Twitter (http://twitter.com/embralmusic) and Instagram (http://instagram.com/embralmusic) , if you’re into that sort of thing.
We’ve reissued our previous releases with reworked artwork, which are all available now from embral.bandcamp.com, and our first NEW release is coming in a few days, just in time for our upcoming shows. Permute is the first of a pair of planned releases of new music recorded live on the road last September, with extended improvisations from performances in Lakewood, OH, New Paltz, NY, and Princeton, NJ. It will be available as a CD or download starting 3/31 on Bandcamp (http://embral.bandcamp.com) , or at the upcoming shows. Which is a lovely segue.
Charles & I will hit the road for a long weekend Midwest mini-tour at the beginning of April, with shows in Ohio and Indiana. Details below, or on the Facebook event page HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/1432764226754340/) :

SAT 4/8 Fort Wayne, IN @ Wunderkammer Gallery w/ Refugia, urbster1
SUN 4/9 Cincinnati, OH @ Witler on the 8’s w/ WRISTS, Marsh Sound, more TBA
MON 4/10 Muncie, IN @ Be Here Now w/ WRISTS, Marsh Sound, urbster1
Excited to have our pal & collaborator Aaron Urbanski (aka urbster1 (https://soundcloud.com/urbster1) ) out with us for a couple shows, and also to be hooking back up with WRISTS (https://wristsmusic.bandcamp.com/) , who we met on the road last fall. WRISTS & Marsh Sound will also be playing a show here in Erie with me the following Thursday 4/13, details on that one HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/1834199823501084/) .
Also, will be returning to Asheville, NC for the first time in a few years the weekend of May 5/6 for Electro-Music Asheville (http://emavl.com) , which is always a great event with a great lineup.
NEW RELEASES! I played lots of new and/or improvised solo music on our fall tour that I was pretty pleased with. I’ve collected the best of it into a release called onewayness was here (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/onewayness-was-here) . It’s 55 minutes of modular drones, late night acoustic chill, and abstract rhythms, and it’s out now either digitally or in a limited edition of 50 handmade/numbered CDr’s. Grab one at a show, or get one HERE (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/onewayness-was-here) .
I talked last time about the Hypogeum release Anticline (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/anticline) – it’s now fully available, either digitally from Ethereal Live (https://ethereallive.bandcamp.com/album/anticline) , or as a nifty screenprinted limited edition CDr from me at shows or on Bandcamp (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/anticline) . I’m sure many of you heard about the tragic fire in December that struck the Ghost Ship, an artists’ community & DIY music venue in Oakland, California. For those who didn’t, you can read about it here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Oakland_warehouse_fire) .
This incident struck pretty close to home for me. I’ve played dozens of places like this, and these kinds of venues are a big part of what helps underground music communities to thrive. So I wanted to do something to help.
Ghost Ship Love Letters (https://onomastic.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-ship-love-letters) is a compilation that I curated and assembled, as a message of sympathy and solidarity from alumni and friends of my electroFLUX experimental music series (http://facebook.com/electroflux.music) here in Erie. All proceeds from this compilation go to the fire relief fund established by Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (http://grayarea.org) , a 501(c)(3) arts nonprofit in the Bay Area.
It’s a really special and very diverse compilation, 39 tracks spanning 3 discs, from local, regional and (inter)national artists connected with the shows we put on. There’s a very limited quantity of 3-CDr sets (of which about half a dozen remain), or it’s also available electronically, and you can get it HERE (https://onomastic.bandcamp.com/album/ghost-ship-love-letters) .
John Chacona wrote a very cool article about the project for Erie Times-News, you can read more here (http://www.goerie.com/entertainmentlife/20170119/erie-artists-more-contribute-to-ghost-ship-love-letters) .
COMING EVENTS!
Lots of cool stuff coming up here locally. Next week, March 30 & 31 is Penn State Behrend’s Digital Media Festival (https://www.facebook.com/events/713250555518657/) . My fellow modular nerd / young padawan Modular Moose (https://modularmoose.bandcamp.com/) and I are collaborating for two perfomances, one each day, in the Yahn Planetarium, with longtime electro-music pal Steve Mokris of Project Ruori (http://ruori.org) coming to town for the occasion to accompany us with live video art in the planetarium dome. Should be quite a thing. And then we’re doing an afterparty situation at Urraro Gallery with lots more sounds and visuals and probably a DJ set from me.
And later that weekend on Sunday, April 2, I’ll be curating (and playing) the Sunday Noise Lunch series in Cleveland, which is an awesome series of themed events which I’ve taken part in a handful of times before. Our theme for this one is “Approaching Silence”, and we’ll be exploring silence, stillness and negative space. Excited to have some longtime Cleveland scene friends involved, as well as some new faces to me. Details on the Facebook event page HERE (https://www.facebook.com/events/1337902609608698/) .
And lots and lots more in the pipeline, including more new music, some scattered live appearances in scattered places, more cool Erie gigs, and more extensive touring (and recording) for embral in the fall. Watch the usual spaces.
I know this got long, thanks for your time. Keep an eye on onewayness.com for the latest and greatest, feel free to connect on Facebook (http://facebook.com/onewayness) / Twitter (http://twitter.com/onewaynessmusic) / Instagram (http://instagram.com/onewayness) (where I update far more often) for pictures of food and records and my kid being cute. Hope to see you all soon.
Love & Oscillators, Adam
