Hi gang.
Well… that was a year that happened, wasn’t it? I hope these first days of 2019 find you all well. It’s been a year of shifting priorities and things taking unexpected directions — neither of which are bad things. But just wanted to share some highlights of what’s been happening and what’s in store.
RANDOM ORACLE:
One of the things I’m most pleased about from 2018 is that the long-in-the-works onewayness studio album Random Oracle (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/random-oracle) made it out into the world. This is an album that had a lot of false starts and setbacks and delays along the way. Obviously I’ve made a lot of music since 2011, but in a lot of ways this is thematically/conceptually the ‘second’ onewayness album that follows immediately on from Blue Star Is Freezing (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/blue-star-is-freezing) . It’s got several pieces that have been prominent parts of the live sets for several years (some going as far back as 2011/12), so I’m pleased to finally have somewhat ‘definitive’ recordings of those pieces.
My pal Andrew Todd (Assorted Psychedelia (https://www.facebook.com/AssortedPsychedelia/) / Battalion of Cloudships (https://battalionofcloudships.bandcamp.com/) / etc.) did the cover art based on some ideas of mine, and made a super nifty handmade limited art edition run of CDs, which we released at a fun combination CD release & gallery opening event featuring a bunch of Andrew’s drawings. At this writing, I think I have literally one left of the art editions, but it will continue to stay in print indefinitely as a standard jewel case CD.
To my own discredit, I haven’t pushed this release as aggressively as I’d like to have done, so some of you reading this may very well be hearing about it for the first time. If that’s the case, do go check it out if you would. It’s an important one for me. It’s available from all the major streaming outlets (iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc.), or (preferably) directly from me at Bandcamp (https://onewayness.bandcamp.com/album/random-oracle) . Dig.
EMBRAL NEWS:
embral (http://embral.org/) (Charles Shriner & myself, aka onewayness + dRachEmUsiK) got together back in the spring to record our upcoming fourth studio album (to be entitled Deep State), based loosely on the improvised products of our late 2017 tour. Our approach was slightly different this time — rather than pieces that we’ve essentially played live in the studio, we created a series of large building blocks that over the ensuing weeks and months we sculpted into two longform pieces of sparse, angry, intimate, funky, deeply weird music. We’re real pleased. It’s taken longer than we planned — life happens — but we’re now putting the finishing touches on final mixes and artwork and beginning to work on release plans. Watch the usual spaces etc etc. 46474597_2155149567838778_6821241066365124608_n.jpg
embral also hit the road this fall for a 10-date tour of the Midwest & South with our good friend Klimchak (http://klimchakmusic.com/) . Unfortunately (cf. ‘unexpected directions’), Charles was unexpectedly sidelined by some last minute health issues, so I ventured out solo as ‘embral’, and did my best to honorably represent, by myself, the thing we do together. To pretty good results, I like to think. But I had a lovely time on the road making music and eating food with Klimchak, and hopefully plenty more of that to follow.
UPCOMING STUFF:
Meanwhile… plenty of stuff in the works. A couple of fun local shows in the next month or so — next Monday at Basement Transmissions with Sex Funeral; January 25 playing abstract impressionist circus music for an art opening shindig at Artlore Studios; February 9 at Erie Movie House with longtime pal & Harsh Noise Hot Tub Club founder Spreaders… Speaking of which, February 9 is (tentatively) going to be the CD release show for the upcoming split/double EP from myself and Battalion of Cloudships. Music is done, we’ve just got to finalize the physical object (which is going to be a double 3” CD, one from me and one from Andrew). There’s another release’s worth of material from me & Andrew that will also see the light of day in some form eventually. Also coming up (sooner or later): a cassette release of solo modular music, and a compilation of some selected non-album tracks from the last several years. There’s also several longish pieces in various stages of doneness that are starting to come into shape as a next solo studio release, but… knowing me, that’s probably more like a 2020 situation.
Thanks as always for listening. Watch onewayness.com (http://onewayness.com/) for the major life events, and give a like and a follow and a whatnot on Facebook (http://facebook.com/onewayness) / Twitter (http://twitter.com/onewaynessmusic) / Instagram (http://instagram.com/onewayness) for stuff of far more frequency and far less significance, if you’re into that. Be well, stay warm, take care of each other.
Love & oscillators,
Adam
