Voter Education (pt 2)
A few notes on the proposed ‘Department of Government Efficiency’:
The first is that a ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ already exists — it’s called the Government Accountability Office. As the Deputy Health Director for Bernie Sanders reminds us, it saves $133 for every dollar of funding it receives. Their recommendations would save the country somewhere between 100 and 200 billion dollars.
Josh Marshall’s hunch as to what this department might end up being feels more reasonable than not: “Apropos of Elon & Vivek's excellent efficiency adventure, back in 1989 Bush sr set VP Dan Quayle up with something called The Council on Competitiveness. It was basically a backroom operation where corps cld toss in a few bucks and get a regulation killed. This will be the same.”
A bit of levity: “as horrible as it is theres something darkly comic about the Department of Efficiency having 2 chairmen.”
A former auditor with the GAO did a Reddit AMA here. It’s nice to see them take the time to spell everything out.
Partial sidebar, but … it appears the current GAO has a podcast?
