HICKS FIX VOL 1 ISSUE 1: MAY

Hello! Welcome to Hicks Fix, a brand new comics newsletter where I post updates, news and process stuff because social media is terrible.
Despite this opener, this will be a positive space where I will so quickly, once a month, give you any news, tell you what I’ve been up to, give you a lil dose of Gay Persuasion WIP pages (with Emma’s blessing) and leave you with one piece of media I’ve been enjoying in the month that was.
This is May’s, and is an example newsletter of what you will get if you subscribe. June’s newsletter will go out early July.
NEWS
QUENTIN BLAKE CENTRE

I’m cheating a little bit with this news but it’s time sensitive! The Quentin Blake Centre opened the doors of its new home in June 2026, and one of its inaugural exhibitions is Queer as Comics, curated by Paul Gravett. As part of the programming, I’ll be on a panel on Wednesday July 8th, and you can buy tickets here or watch online. Hopefully see you there?
THE CUCKENING

Also slightly cheating, but The Cuckening, my 2025 24 hour comic, received a brand new release courtesy of the amazing Diskette Press in February! This new edition is in a cutie smaller US size, and is available worldwide.
It might be your worst nightmare: you've taken your girlfriend out for a wonderful date, but it all goes wrong when tonight's entertainment is none other than your girlfriend's ex. What's worse? They're a magician, and the Incredible Gosmo is about to make a fool out of you on stage. Can you make it through the routine with your dignity intact?
This comic was so fun (if delirious) to make last year, and I’m really proud of it and excited to get it in front of more people’s eyeballs! Buy your copy here.

CORPORATE LEECH AT NEW BRIGHTON BEACH
Something unexpected that happened in May is I tripped and got a new idea for a short 16 page comic. I thumbnailed and pencilled it in May. I like to thumbnail at A5 (aka final page size) and thumbnail directly in pen (0.5 point fine liner). I find this approach gets me to really focus on the ✨cartooning✨ I’m calling it Corporate Leech at New Brighton Beach, and you’ll hear all about in June’s newsletter. It’ll be on sale at Alt Bazaar’s XXX Market on July 5th (if I find a printer!)

UPCOMING EVENTS
ALT BAZAAR XXX Sunday 5th July, Sub Rosa, Liverpool
AN EVENING WITH QUEER AS COMICS Wednesday 8th July, Quentin Blake Centre, London

GAY PERSUASION
Emma is deep into the pencils of Gay Persuasion!! Our next graphic novel collab is a queer modern adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion and we’re both very in love with it and very excited to share it with you next year. Here’s a page from Anne Elliot’s first foray into a gay bar 👁️👄👁️

MEDIA
Finally, in May I watched House (1977) as research for a top secret collab that’s cooking…
I think the gothic mixed media visuals of this are absolutely stunning: it’s dreamlike, technicolour, bizarre, and sumptuous. But the gratuitous nudity of its teen subjects is gross and lets the whole film down.
