Your monthly non-spammy-gif-heavy newsletter from your friends at oio.
Hello oio friends! 🌝
Now that spooky season is over we can start thinking about hot chocolate, presents, and having trees indoor for a couple of months.
November starts off with BIG NEWS™️ because we’re launching something, and we hope you’ll want to catch it.
We are opening a store (well an online one), where you can buy real products that you can actually use in the real world. We love future products, but we also love putting these products in your hands.
The all new oio.store is officially online! And with it our first product launch: the Spawns collection.
They’re cool, shiny eating accessories and we made only a hundred, so hurry up if you wanna scoop one for yourself, or for that one friend that really likes spoons.
We also have a few more news that we'd love to share, but we are saving them for the next issue of the newsletter, as this issue is all about spoons.
So sit back 🛋, cozy up ☕️, and get ready for some oio news 📰! (it’s another spoonful).
your peek into the oioverse
We couldn’t launch a store without something to sell, so in the past few months we've been developing our very first line of products - the Spawns collection. Born out of a collaboration with Hypercraft designer (and good friend) giosampietro, this limited edition is a series of eating accessories that look like spoons (but they are not!).
The Spawns collection was generated through a process that we call Artisanal Intelligence. We worked together with an artificial intelligence, a machine learning algorithm that worked with us at every step in the creative process, from concept and ideation all the way to design and manufacturing. Smart people would have generated a product with a prompt and then 3D print it, but we did it the old school (AI) way.
We hand-picked a large dataset of images, used to train our own algorithm from scratch. Then we created our own custom process to turn a stream of simple images into beautiful three-dimensional forms, ready to be spawned into metal. We worked tirelessly for the past few months with Greggio Argenterie, one of the oldest silverware factories in the world, a landmark institution in the world of silver.
The result is an impeccable set of products, hand-polished and soup-ready, available in just a hundred units.
Against every common sense, we launched an independent online store. Against every SEO logic, it's a completely new URL. Against every business principle, it doesn't really make much money. So why are we doing it? Well, the best things in life don't make any sense, and the oio store could just be one of them.
Our design director Matteo Loglio tried to make some sense of it by writing a sort of draft of a vision of what this store could be:
💬 "The oio store is a public front that connects our creative outputs with the real world, extending our ideas beyond the limits of the conceptual space. They become real tangible objects (or virtual and ethereal?) for people to own and buy, and eventually become active elements of our work."
Our Discord community is growing, we are now almost 600 people. Discord is where we announce things before any other channel - workshops, drops and job postings. If you want to stay tuned with the hottest news from oio, make sure to smash this JOIN link.
