Issue 10

Hello oio friends! πŸ™Œ

It’s been quite a while since our last newsletter but we are still here, pushing wild experiments and cool products, as we always do. It's an exciting time here at oio as we are finally launching a few things out in the wild β€” you will see evolving furniture in our latest experiment with SPACE10, then a few algorithms, who tired of working for big banks decided to form an art collective in one of Italy's most suggestive creative research centres. Talks from our founders are also finally available to watch online, and of course the usual collection of cool links from our Discord community. So take a deep breath, count to ten and enjoy this tightly packed issue of oio news.

Il Collettivo Intelligente

We’ve been working on an exhibition called β€œIl Collettivo Intelligente” β€” a group of four algorithms, old friends who grew tired of working for big banks and finally decided to dedicate their talents to their artistic vocations. We have the Writer, all busy composing an infinite poem, the Illustrator, who’s constantly learning to draw, the Dreamer, steadily weaving fantastic worlds, and finally the Composer, playing an infinite melody hand-in-hand with the visitors of the exhibition. The show takes place at FABRICA, the iconic creative research centre set in a gorgeous location in the Italian Treviso area. The oio team worked with the current cohort of creatives to bring these installations to life.Β We don't have many pictures of the exhibition yet as it opens today, but keep an eye on our insta to get all the latest updates, but here's a preview of some of the installations:

The exhibition will be on just for a few days, from the 23rd of May to the 27th, as part of the Treviso AI week. It’s a good excuse to take a trip around the prosecco valleys after watching the exhibition. Visits require booking here

An everyday experiment

Updatables is our latest project, in collaboration with IKEA’s research and design lab SPACE10, for their platform Everyday Experiments. It’s a new family of furniture that evolves with your house, allowing for things to stay relevant over time, ultimately reducing the need to throw them away. Because the application makes use of extra IKEA parts, each minor customisation could give your items a new lease of life, saving materials and most importantly having fun in the process.Β We even created an online tool that lets you play with genetic algorithms.

This was just a teaser but you can head over to the official page on the Everyday Experiment platform to find out more about it.

Natura Obliqua

An exhibition by our friend and collaborator giosampietro recently opened in Milan's Parco Gallery. Giosampietro is a an accidental jeweller and Natura Obliqua is a capsule collection of rings, a limited series of nine different models, genderless and custom made on demand with non-precious metals. Gio also recently collaborated with oio on an upcoming houseware project that will be presented in a few weeks, so stay tuned.

Working with students

As you know part of our mission is to make emerging technologies accessible to everyone, and education is a huge part of that - that’s why we teach and talk in schools and cultural institutions all around the world. This time it was oio’s co-founder Matteo Loglio, who’s been involved with UAL, the Universities of the Arts in London, and in particular with Central Saint Martins for quite some time now. This year he was invited to help graduating students with their portfolios, providing guidance and feedback. Heartwarmingly wholesome ✨.
