Hello! Rob / ohyung here <3 It has been approximately three years when I last sent this newsletter and the little free platform Tinyletter I used to send it has since died (I’ve now latched onto Substack, another free newsletter service).
My deep apologies to everyone who has wanted my music updates and isn’t on social media, the joys and horrors of life have just taken my mind elsewhere and I just neglected it. However I’ve recently been feeling like becoming less reliant on social media for sharing music, and building up a little newsletter feels a little bit better so I’m hoping to become more consistent with this!
Soo on to business (starting from recent and working backwards in time for three years)
I recently wrote the music to A24’s newest film Problemista which was just released nationwide on March 22! I’m very proud of this score, it took me almost a full year to score and is by far the most ambitious project I’ve ever worked on, so please watch at your nearest indie theater and listen to the score online <3
If you like the music, you can buy a Problemista vinyl set from A24 which is beautifully designed by Fred Heinsohn and features two LPs and a fold out Problemista mural poster!
In 2022 I scored a beautiful film Bruiser which is now on Hulu for your consumption. It features Trevante Rhodes from Moonlight and I’m also very proud of this score (which is very different from Problemista). You can listen to the soundtrack on any streaming platform but here’s a Spotify link.
I released a record in April 22 titled imagine naked! which was my first foray into ambient music. It’s titled after a phrase in the poem ‘vegetalscape’ by my friend t, and each song is titled after different phrases of the poem. It was very soothing for me to make this record and peopled seemed really drawn to it, and was even written up as the #1 ambient record of 2022 by Popmatters and one of the Top 50 albums of 2022 by NPR. I also am really proud of this music video I made for the song “symphonies sweeping” from the record which is basically an experimental video journal of my life between 2020 and 2021.
There’s so much more I’d love to share, looots of things that have happened between now and then but I’m really not a writer and I can tell I’m losing steam as I’m writing so this is it for now! I hope you enjoy this little music update, if not I believe substack is easy to unsubscribe from! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hopefully I can sustain this and send these more often, and I’d love to hear from you all as well. Much love and Free Palestine!
