Monday's Puzzle - Evapoweight

Suppose you have 100 pounds of cucumbers that are 99% water by weight. You leave the cucumbers out in the sun until they're 98% water (again, by weight). How much do the cucumbers weigh now?

[SPOILER] Answer to Monday's Puzzle

50 pounds.

This answer is of course rather counterintuitive, since a reduction from 99% to 98% water doesn't seem like it could possibly be a 50 pound reduction in overall weight.

It makes more sense if you think about it from the perspective of the solids rather than the water. The cucumbers were originally 99% water, which means they must have been 1% solid. Since you started out with 100 pounds total, that's 99 pounds of water and 1 pound of solid. After you leave them out in the sun, they are 98% water and 2% solid. The weight of the solids didn't change, though - it's still just 1 pound. And in order for that 1 pound to account for 2% of the weight, the total weight must be 50 pounds.

But at the end of the day you're still stuck with 50 pounds of cucumber. Hope you have a good pickle recipe!
