WORD WEDNESDAY - Put. A. Word. On. It.

Today's Puzzle

What one word can you put at the end of each of the following to make new words?
  • a
  • back
  • down
  • for
  • in
  • on
  • out
  • to
  • up
  • wind

To be clear, you're adding the same word to each of the words above. We're looking for a full word (not a suffix like -ing) and the result in each case should be a single word, not a phrase.

Tuesday's Puzzle - You need braiiiins for this one

It is nightfall, and you and three of your friends are being pursued by hideous, brain-hungry zombies (seriously, how did you get yourself into this situation?). Fortunately, zombies are pretty slow, so you've been able to outrun them so far. Now, though, you've come to a decrepit and rickety bridge that you must cross in order to survive. Only two people can cross the bridge at a time or else it will collapse. You only have one flashlight, and no one can cross the bridge in the dark, so the flashlight must be carried on every crossing in either direction. You are fast (and very scared), so it only takes you 1 minute to cross. Your friends, though, are slower: one friend takes 2 minutes to cross, another takes 5 minutes, and the third friend takes 10 minutes. The zombies are exactly 17 minutes behind you. How do you get everyone across the bridge in time?

[SPOILER] Answer to Tuesday's Puzzle

The key here is to waste as little time as possible by sending the two slowest people over the bridge together. Here are the steps (we'll refer to you and your friends by how long it takes you to cross):

  1. 1 and 2 cross. Time elapsed: 2 minutes.
  2. 1 returns. Time elapsed: 3 minutes.
  3. 5 and 10 cross. Time elapsed: 13 minutes
  4. 2 returns. Time elapsed: 15 minutes
  5. 1 and 2 cross. Time elapsed: 17 minutes.
