Thoughts on OpenTelemetry
Eric Mustin shares his Thoughts on OpenTelemetry in 2021 and while he's not unbiased I agree with the overall sentiment. Related, there was a nice article by SiliconANGLE on OpenTelemetry attracts major enterprise interest with a similar, upbeat overall message. Last but not least, Christian Klein of Elastisys wrote a short but sweet post on What was observability again?, published on the CNCF blog.
Instrumentation
In Practical OpenTelemetry part 1: Python and Practical OpenTelemetry part 2: Go we learn how to instrument code in the respective programming language and consume the traces in Jaeger. Thanks for putting this together, Alex Boten.
Vulnerability monitoring
I found Automating vulnerability monitoring with Snyk, Prometheus and Grafana by Daniel Berman of Snyk a clever way to use open source o11y tooling for strengthening your security posture.
Telemetry mini-survey
My colleague Jaana Dogan asked asked on Twitter:
On a daily basis, what are some of the telemetry collection agents you use (e.g. fluent bit, telegraf, stats, OpenTelemetry, vendor specific agents)?
See for yourself what folks answer. This is instructive. Thank you, Jaana!
Introducing SigNoz
Pranay Prateek shared an introduction to SigNoz, positioned as an open-source alternative to DataDog. Based on OpenTelemetry, SigNoz bundles Apache Kafka and Apache Druid with their own frontend, delivering you p90/p99 latencies, error rates and more, out of the box.
AWS observability workshop
Check out the One Observability Workshop, walking you through o11y solutions in AWS. The workshop has been extended to cover new services such as Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus (AMP) and OSS components like the AWS Distro for OpenTelemetry (ADOT).
Fluent Bit operator
I stumbled upon kubesphere/fluentbit-operator, the Fluent Bit Operator for Kubernetes, automating a number of tasks such as daemonset management, to select plugins via labels, and dynamic reloading of configurations.
That was it for this edition of the o11y newsletter. Feel free to share news items with me via Twitter—DMs are open if you like to share something in private. Stay safe and hope to see you around next week!
