Bronwyn Schuster's Artist Notes: Once Upon a Time
Once upon a time … there was a story about a bear, a girl, and a long journey that entranced the mind of two artists. Together they spent many late nights drawing, sewing, painting, gluing, until their fingertips were worn, until their arms were heavy from use, and they had filled a room from top to bottom with art.

Once upon a time … there was a story about a bear, a girl, and a long journey that entranced the mind of two artists. Together they spent many late nights drawing, sewing, painting, gluing, until their fingertips were worn, until their arms were heavy from use, and they had filled a room from top to bottom with art.
Thus was born the show “I’ll Find You East of the Sun and West of the Moon” by Bronwyn Schuster and Jori Phillips

I first read East of the Sun and West of the Moon in Andrew Lang’s Blue Fairy Book collection. It was a dog eared beat up copy that I think my friends mom gave to me? It became one of my favourites and I have made many inspired pieces of art from it over the years.

I’ve made a doll, a necklace, and many drawings before this year. But together with Jori we delved deeper into the story and imagery.

There are many more pieces to see, and you can find them on my website. I recommend viewing on a desktop browser, as some of the paintings are of shapes and formats that don’t fit very well into a small handheld device.
To see more of Jori’s creations, you can check out their instagram. She has created lots of fascinating videos of their works in progress too.

If you are interested on delving into my sketchbook that worked in to create my paintings for the show, you can download a PDF (with all my notes and scribbles) on Patreon by subscribing as a monthly member or for a one time $5 purchase.
I feel like it has taken me a very long time to get this all together in a concise yet worthy format to share with you. It is hard to translate the tangible physical world into something magical for your pocket, but I will keep trying.
I hope this letter has found you well, and filled you up with whimsy and delight, or at least topped you up with a little bit of magic.
With love,
Bronwyn
