Happy Fall! 🍂🍁

The October event page is now live and accepting RSVPs! Plus, a few updates and announcements about the future.

New events platform

Freevite seemed well received, but this month, we’re trying out a new platform, Luma. I’m hoping it’ll strike a nice balance between cost (it takes a small portion of donations but has no upfront fee), usability, privacy, and useful features. If you have feedback, please share!

New capacity limits—please RSVP!

We keep growing every month—which is great!—but we’re at the point where I’m starting to worry about crowding or overwhelming our venue. So starting this month, I’m trying out capacity limits. If you’re not in the habit of registering, please do RSVP so we can get an accurate headcount. And if you later change your mind or can’t make it, please update your RSVP to free up space for others.

The cat’s out of the bag as a far as the venue location (unless we move again at some point!), so having a waitlist may be fairly moot, but we’ll see how it goes. It’s not a bad problem to have!

Venue updates

As you know if you joined us for a packed event last month, we found the roof closed for a private party. Our reservation wasn’t confirmed because of some communication gaps, and it wasn’t clear if we’d be able to continue getting space at all without paying a fee.

I’ve since connected with the current events team and we’re definitely confirmed for next Wednesday. However, the roof is already booked solid for private events in December, and November isn’t looking good. Beyond that, they haven’t yet decided on winterizing the roof again this year, meaning it might not be available at all in the colder months.

Finding suitable outdoor space in winter is getting less and less feasible as sidewalk sheds come down, so I think it may become something we can only do seasonally from this point. If we can continue to book indoor space through the winter, and come out again when the roof reopens, I think that’ll be the best bet. (Of course, if you’ve got a lead on a comfortably heated roof or garden we can access year-round, send it in!)

RIP NYC Game Dev calendar

Some of you may have been using the public NYC Game Dev Google calendar to keep tabs on these socials and lots of other events in the scene, and so you may have noticed it go missing a few weeks ago. It’s gone, I’m afraid; presumably accidentally deleted for everyone by a lapsed contributor who didn’t want to see it anymore. The calendar is unfortunately unrecoverable, but the IGDA NYC chapter, which managed it, is working on a replacement. In the meantime, they are also developing a similar calendar on the new MakeGames.nyc site.

NYC Indie Games also has its own Google calendar listing only the socials, and that’s still live and actively updated.

Phew, that’s a lot of news for one these things! If your eyes glazed over, that’s ok, mine did too while wrangling it all. Just RSVP here and see you on October 1!

Cheers,

Jess
