The Conservation Society (ConSoc)
Hey new and returning students to NTSU Conservation Society!
Who are we? We are a friendly sociable and practical society with a whole range of events on offer, both sociable and environmentally focused. We have been running for 13 years now and have won the society of the year award in 2016, 2017 and event of the year award in 2018. We welcome and encourage students from a wide range of NTU courses who share our interest in conservation. As we know, this can take many forms, whether it be watching the coolest bugs, watching and photographing wildlife in their natural habitats, or volunteering to manage such habitats gaining practical skills, something that the survival of many species depends upon.
So, what can we offer? Now, due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak, we cannot promise that all of our planned events will be running, the ever changing government restrictions will have an effect the societies events so please be aware that some of the events might not be happening. The safety of the staff and students is our top priority. As always if an event is to be canceled, we will let you know straight away! But... never say never. At ConSoc we provide you with opportunities to take part in a diverse range of conservation based activities, some will offer a chance to enhance your ID skills, others may offer the chance to improve your practical skills set, gain knowledge and experience through the use of hand tools and other equipment which we provide. This will also give you an opportunity to put the theory learned in lectures into practice, which in turn will enhance your CV, along with your personal and professional development. Over time this will give you an edge over your competitors when the time arrives for you to find employment or volunteer placements within the conservation/environment sector. In fact, many of our previous members have stated that being an active member of ConSoc did in fact help them to find work. These sessions can take place on the Brackenhurst Estate or off-site, often on projects with leading national conservation organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts and the RSPB. We also volunteer with the local Biodiversity Action Group, ran by Nottingham County Council and work closely with their Biodiversity Officer assisting in the Grizzled Skipper butterfly project, which incidentally scooped the NTSU award for best Society Activity last academic year and more recently a project to eradicate Signal Crayfish from a city pond. In past trips we have visited the North Norfolk coast to see the beautiful birds and mammals it treasures. The Peak District to witness the Red Deer rut and the illusive Mountain Hare. Moth Trapping on Brackenhurst Estate along with night time wildlife walks, hedgehog tracking and bird surveys. At the end of the academic year, a end of year trip will take place to the highest attending students to ConSoc, this trip will be a week in north Scotland seeking out the charismatic wildlife that inhabits the country. (All events are subject to change if they do not abide by government guidelines).
What is the membership fee? The membership fee is a total of £10 per year. This goes towards trips and events that we host making them affordable.
When can you get involved? We have many events running throughout the year and our first volunteer session is on Wednesday September 30th 19:00 - 21:15 which will be an online Wildlife Quiz testing your knowledge through Kahoot! If you are interested, please follow the link below and book a place to be added to the quiz group. All of our events will be posted on our Facebook page with all the details.
