Welcome back to our second edition of Shorts articles! In this type of article, we cover a very interesting topic in under three minutes. Immerse yourself in an article about the price of air…
Although you don’t know it, in regular day-to-day life you’re buying multiple dollars worth of air. Even though it’s supposed to be free.
You’ve probably snacked on a flavorful, tangy and delicious potato chip in your lifetime, savoring the many crunches that come with a bag of them. $2 to $3 is the average price for a packet of chips, and even though that seems extremely cheap and has good-value-for-money, it’s a scam.
Have you ever opened a bag of chips, breathed in the irresistible salty scent of them and realized that more than 3/4 of the bag was air? Disappointment is hard to feel as you’re about to munch on a decadent snack, which is exactly why potato chip companies do this to you: adding a price tag onto air.
The actual price of the chips made can range from $1 to $1.80, but as we mentioned above, the price of chips is more than that. Sure, there’s a certain addition to the price so manufactures can make money, but ultimately entire dollar differences are unfair, as these huge companies sell thousands of chips on a daily basis.
On the image below from Bakery & Snacks, we have an accurate analysis to how much air is a in different bags of chips.
A gauge (shown in the image above) in the green zone would give the best value-for-money, but in this case the highest is yellow, which is extremely poor. Usually, the price difference between the COGS and actual price is around twenty to thirty cents, but in this case we’re talking $1 to $1.75. Which is appalling.
Instead of being completely negative about the air, however, let’s focus on a good trait of the air. Within factories, nitrogen is inserted into those bags, preserving the crispness and cushioning the crunchy chips during transport. This allows your salty snack to be cheap for manufacturers, which means cheaper for you as a consumer.
Next time you’re buying a packet of chips, be sure to have a feel and make sure there’s not so much air within the bag! If you’re searching for the best bags for your bucks, we have a few reccomendations:
