TaB: MIDI, Python, incident response, and taking a break
Hello and happy Friday!
I've got 4 blog posts for you to read this month. I think they're good ones! I hope you enjoy, and please let me know if you do. Hearing what people like always makes my day better, and it gives me motivation to write more things like that.
I'm nervous about this, but I'm taking a break. I'm not publishing any blog posts during May. I'm feeling pretty burnt out from everything happening in the world, and I've been going nonstop for years, and I put out a post every week even while I was very sick. So it's time for me to take a break.
During my break from writing and from extracurricular tech, I'm going to focus on music. It's healing for me. If you're in the Philly area, I'll probably be doing a live set at the end of May at West Philly Porchfest, so come check it out and support all the musicians!
Blog updates
- Typing using my keyboard (the other kind): I hooked up my new keyboard to my computer and pressed keys, but nothing happened in my text editor. I mean, this is kinda expected, since it's supposed to sound like a piano—it's the other kind of keyboard. But we can fix it anyway! I made it so you can type using a MIDI device, and the result was surprisingly... groovy?
- Python is an interpreted language with a compiler: A friend and I were talking about Python and something they said sparked me to realize that we call Python an interpreted language, and it has a compiler. Which leads to the question: what does it mean to be interpreted or compiled? What's going on turns out to have a little nuance.
- The five stages of incident response: The scene: you're on call for a web app, and your pager goes off. What happens next?
- Measuring my Framework laptop's performance in 3 positions: I use my laptop in this weird vertical position, and someone speculated it could have cooling/performance benefits. After a few months of procrastination, I benchmarked it! The clickbait thing is to say "the results will surprise you" but I don't know that. They did surprise me, though.
I hope you have a great month!
