TaB: I'm back! Proving that programs halts, and rethink that boolean.

Hello and happy Friday!

I'm back! It feels really good to be writing again. The break was exactly what I needed, and now writing is restorative and fun again like it was before. I have two posts for you this month, and I think you'll like them.

Now that I'm back, I won't be writing with quite the regularity I was before. I'll publish up to once a week, but there will be some weeks that I skip. No more forcing myself to do it when I'm not feeling it—sometimes the world is just too much, and I'm tired, and I have to spend more quality time with my musical instruments.

Blog updates

  • Proving that every program halts: It turns out, through the power of logic and saxophones, I can prove that every program halts. Maybe this is a playful post, or maybe it's serious, only one way to find out.

  • That boolean should probably be something else: Boolean logic underpins modern computing, and yet I think the boolean is one of the most misused datatypes. So many instances of booleans are really best expressed as a different datatype, like an enum or a datetime.

Music updates

During my break, I finished up preparing an about 30-minute set for a local DIY music festival, West Philly Porchfest. My partner recorded 3 of the songs, and you can listen to them on YouTube. The second one in the set, Anticipation, is my original composition.

I have two other fun updates.

First, I got my saxophone back from the shop, and I have a mic installed in the neck. (Drilling into an instrument makes techs nervous, since it's a one-way thing!) That means that I have a pedalboard for my saxophone now. I might write a post about it, if people are curious.

a photo of a saxophone pedalboard. it has a distortion pedal running into an octave pedal then a multieffects pedal and finally a looper pedal. there is also a power supply, another foot pedal labeled "Tascam". the whole thing looks homemade but not sloppy, and there is a mess of cables on the floor that do look sloppy.

And second, I have a new piece that I'm polishing up then recording. I'm not sure if it'll be done before next newsletter (I don't do deadlines for hobbies now), but I'll try to have at least a demo. It's called "Little Joys (Sunshine and Lapcats)".

I hope you have a great month! You'll hear from me again in August.

I hope you have a great month!
