TaB: Great things about Rust, MIDI, my writing process, and more
Hello and happy Friday!
This month you've got five blog posts from me! You can see I was on a bit of a Rust kick, with two of the five being about Rust. There are a few non-technical ones, which is typical for me these days.
2025 has been off to a... start. I've felt kind of low energy lately, but writing and music have kept me going. I'm trying to keep my projects moving forward and keep my mind off things, and trying to remember to hug my family and be present. Last week I got to go to the Guggenheim in New York with a couple of friends, and it really helped me stay grounded and remember the art—and pain—that exists in the world.
I hope you're having an okay time, and that you have a good February.
Blog updates
- Great things about Rust that aren't just performance: I write a lot of Rust code, even when I don't particularly need things to go fast. There is a lot more to love about Rust than just performance! Here are some of my favorites.
- Beginning of a MIDI GUI in Rust: I needed a UI for a project I'm working on, so I decided to build it in Rust with the immediate mode library egui. It ended up working pretty nicely, and the paradigm feels fairly intuitive!
- My writing process, and how I keep it sustainable: A reader asked me about my writing process and how I avoid burnout. This is what I wrote to respond to them! One of the key things for me is making the process fun and changing it if it becomes a chore.
- Bright lights in dark times: It's kind of dark times right now. And I'm definitely only talking about the days being short. I got some very bright lamps and made a custom shade for them. Little joys like this will help us, a little bit, make it through this winter.
- Summarizing our recommendations for software documentation: A coworker and I started some research studying what software engineers value and how this relates to our documentation practices. We started with publishing a case study. Here are the recommendations we came up with for that case.
