Virtual talk on UFOs next week!
Hey everyone!
Stopping by your inbox to say that I'm giving a virtual talk next week entitled "UFOs: History & lore, fact & fiction", and I'd love it if you came! You can watch live (11/29 at 7pm CT), or via the recording (which will be available after the live event). Click here to register.
This lecture is drawn from my current class at SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago), where I've been teaching a course called Search for Life in the Universe. Over the semester, we've covered everything from the origins of life, to exoplanets, to Dyson spheres, and yes, even UFOs. It's been really fun and rewarding to cover a subject I love so much, and I think one that's particularly suited to teaching students about the process of science, the ways we formulate questions that are hard to ask (let alone answer), and how societal values shape our curiosities. My students are young artists, so while yes I would like for them to leave with some basic hard science info (e.g. what is a cell), I mostly want to provide them with a framework for asking good questions, for understanding what science does and the kinds of questions it can answer, and for seeing where the human shapes notions of the alien. I love my students this term, and I'm super excited to be teaching this class again (twice, due to demand!) in the spring semester.
Please join me next week, and feel free to share the registration link with anyone you think might be interested! Tickets are tiered pricing, please choose what best suits your budget. All connection info goes out prior to the live event, with the recording link to follow the live.
