Making Values-Based Decisions for Your Career
Hello all,
✨EXCITING NEWS!✨ Are you overwhelmed by decision fatigue? Struggling to figure out the next step in your career?
I am thrilled to announce that I just launched my first mini-workshop, and it's starting next week on Feb 1! It's called Making Values-Based Decisions for Your Career, and it's a sliding-scale, go-at-your-own-pace course that helps participants a chance to work through a series of exercises to identify their core values, and apply them towards making value-aligned career decisions. Full details here: https://notnotrocketscience.com/workshops
This workshop is:
sliding scale, with discounts available to anyone on a tight budget
self-directed, so participants can work through the materials at their own pace
either a solo journey, or one where you can share and get feedback from other course participants (or some combination of the two!)
I've wanted to offer workshops and classes for some time, but some of the more ambitious offerings take time to build. And, as you might imagine, recovering from a brain injury kinda throws a wrench in the works of just about any plan! (fun fact: after I sent that last newsletter at the beginning of the month to tell everyone I got hit by a car, six people unsubscribed! I am trying not to take it too personally, but sheesh).
Anyway, mentoring others through times of change and crisis has been part of my life for a while, both through mentoring early career researchers, and in non-astronomy settings (not many people know this, but I was a volunteer crisis counselor, and have some training in abolitionist mental health interventions). Because I am not in academia these days, advising/mentoring students isn't technically part of my job-- but over the years, I find I am often called to work with people who need some help sorting out their next steps. Working with these folks has been hugely rewarding, but I have also wondered how to make some of the tools that I find helpful available to more people (without having to clone myself).
Making Values-Based Decisions for Your Career is one answer to that wondering-- it's based on an essay I wrote many years ago for junior astronomers, but I've reworked it into a series of guided exercises that are intended to be useful to anyone struggling to figure out their next steps. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, please join or share!
