dispatch #1: greetings

hello everybody, eva here with some words. my first newsletter. how thrilling!

a newsletter feels kinda old fashioned and uncool, but lately i’ve been interested in embracing the old fashioned and uncool. joining webrings. building a guestbook. stuff we used to put on the internet all the time, before the internet became five websites that are all screenshots of each other.

A tweet from Tom Eastman: "I'm old enough to remember when the Internet wasn't a group of five websites, each consisting of screenshots of text from the other four."

writing a newsletter feels like a tiny act of resistance. of embracing tech that does less and does it more slowly. more intentionally.

in the end it’s just another email. but it’s one i hope you enjoy :)

i don't know where this little letter will lead, but here's to starting something new. let me know what you like!

latelyyy

in february i attended an inspiring 3-week workshop at fruitful school called npc artist, led by john provencher. i built a choose-your-own-adventure poem about design, a looping, generative text-based site about overstimulation, some funky staff paper, and an svg generator for lissajous curves.

Design is the deliberate creation of light for others
how do you define design?

i've spent the bulk of my time as a designer focused on building pragmatic solutions to problems, so stepping back to play with shapes and colors and interaction and text for its own sake has been a breath of much-needed fresh air! i left feeling energized and optimistic about technology in a way i haven't in awhile and i’m excited to continue cultivating that artistic energy and practice at the school for poetic computation this summer!

for anyone who is burnt out in tech, make art. it doesn't have to be good. you don’t even have to share it. you just have to make it.

thanks to fruitful school class, i've started using are.na, the cool kid's pinterest, to compile inspiration. browse my channels for logos with little animals, anime interfaces, and scanography. please upload some more kitschy nyc bodega art

Three logos. The first is a little dog with a sword in its mouth that says "Fuck around and find out". The second is a cat sitting on the ground examining a clover with a magnifying glass. The third is a roughly-drawn cat face with a smiley mouth that says "YES" beneath it.

anime interfaces

recently i've been partnering with a lovely trans-led team to develop an web app to help trans people navigate the legal name change process. it's called namesake and i'm excited to share more soon!!

A snail in the style of a photocopy sits atop the word "Namesake" written in a condensed serif font, on a purple background
logo i made for namesake. did you know some snails can change their sex

listening

magic bird of fire - salsoul orchestra - obsessed with this 70s disco rendition of stravinsky's firebird that i first heard in this infectious waacking dance vid

PERSONA SUPER LIVE P-SOUND BOMB !!!! 2017 - played my first persona game in 2023 and i’m. obsessed.

<COPINGMECHANISM> - WILLOW - channeling angsty teenage girlhood, or something

all born screaming - st. vincent - the daddy album was a flop but this one is v good

watching

masahiro sakurai on creating games - a treasure trove of game development insights from the creator of super smash bros

drain cleaning AUSTRALIA - i would do anything for this man. he has found the secret to life i am pretty sure

reading

are we watching the internet die? - "As more internet content is created, either partially or entirely through generative AI, the models themselves will find themselves increasingly inbred, training themselves on content written by their own models which are, on some level, permanently locked in 2023, before the advent of a tool that is specifically intended to replace content created by human beings."

freedom of sex - the moral case for letting trans kids change their bodies. a major publication gets it right: trans rights are about bodily autonomy for all

in loving memory of square checkbox - rip to a usability icon

sam cam

finally, the thing you all are here for. my orange gremlin

Samwise, an orange tabby cat, looks toward the camera through a glass table, which distorts and shrinks his mouth into a funny little grin
almost 11. tell him happy birthday

until next time,
Eva
