This weekend in Norwalk: the last boat to Sheffield Island, the Bernadettes on the Green, and a chess tournament at the library

Morning, Norwalk. The season has an expiration date on it this weekend. The Sheffield Island ferry makes its final sailings of 2026 on Sunday, the Norwalk Green plays the last show on its posted summer lineup on Saturday, and the lifeguards at Calf Pasture and Shady are down to weekends only until Labor Day. None of that is bad news exactly. It just means the things you have been meaning to get to since June are now on a clock.

Best for families this weekend: the free chess tournament at the Norwalk Public Library on Saturday, running 10 AM to 5 PM, and the Sheffield Island lighthouse ferry, which every kid should do once and which will not be an option again until next summer.

The last sailings of the season to Sheffield Island Lighthouse, departing 90 Water Street (South Norwalk). Two departures a day at 10 AM and 2 PM, returning at 1 PM and 5 PM, and then that is it until 2027. The round trip runs about three hours with time on the island in the middle. The Seaport Association asks you at the dock 30 minutes before departure, which on a boat that is the only ride back off an island is worth taking literally. Everyone needs a ticket regardless of age, and coolers are capped at 18 by 18 by 24 inches. There is paid parking on Haviland Street. Ticketed, all ages, outdoors. Schedule.

Wall Street landowners want the city to loosen the zoning rules on their own block, and they have a specific list. With Wall Street Place finally opening at 61 Wall Street after twenty years, the neighborhood association is pushing a pilot overlay zone with three changes: drop the density cap of one unit per 500 square feet, waive off-street parking requirements for projects of 60 units or fewer, and let developments under 19 units pay into the affordable housing fund instead of deed-restricting units. Jason Milligan, whose revised Isaacs Street proposal is down to 207 units from 224, is behind much of it. Nancy McGuire, who owns 64 Wall Street and appraises commercial real estate for a living, and Marc Alan of Factory Underground both sit on the association board. Planning and Zoning Director Steve Kleppin and Parking Authority Chairman Eric Rains have concerns, the Parking Authority put them in a memo back on June 23, and the district already hits 100 percent parking occupancy at peak. Michelle Suda is Norwalk's nominee for 2027 Connecticut Teacher of the Year, after thirty years at the same school. She has spent her entire career at Marvin Elementary, starting in second grade, moving to third, and landing in fifth. Principal Sue-Ellen O'Shea said "she has the ability to make connections with students, and that's just what our fifth-grade students needed." The community garden at Fodor Farm has a five year waiting list, which tells you something about Norwalk. The five acre complex at 328 Flax Hill Road holds 280 plots, each 12 feet by 4 feet, rented for $30 a season to more than 350 active gardeners. Molly Fox waited four years for hers and this summer pickled jalapeños and froze lemongrass out of it. Lakeisha Davies waited five and is growing collard greens, cucumbers and marigolds. The Bernadettes on the Norwalk Green, 8 Park Street, 7 to 9 PM. The First Taxing District's summer series on the Green has run a short season this year, and August 29 is the last date on its posted lineup, one week after the Silver Steel Band. The Green has been a public gathering spot here since the 1600s, which is a long time for a lawn to keep its job. Bring a chair. Free, all ages, outdoors. Details.

2026 Summer Classical and Musicant Yazgoor Chess Tournament at the Norwalk Public Library, 1 Belden Avenue, 10 AM to 5 PM in the Full Auditorium. Seven hours of quiet concentration in an air conditioned room, free, and genuinely good for a kid who has run out of summer. Free, families welcome, indoors. Details.

Los Piratas del rock at Bambu Night Club, 11 Washington Street (South Norwalk). Doors at 9 PM, band at 10:15. A rock en español tribute set running Maná, Soda Stereo, Vilma Palma e Vampiros, Hombres G and Los Prisioneros, which is a nineties Latin rock radio station played by people standing in front of you.
