This week in Norwalk: puffins at Maritime Aquarium, Manresa's $500K research consortium, Revolutionary Roots opens

!Norwalk Pulse

Good morning, Norwalk.

The harbor seals have company. Atlantic puffins are moving into the Maritime Aquarium, a $500,000 research consortium just formed around Manresa Island with Woods Hole and four other institutions, and four Norwalk kids are heading to Michigan to compete at the national Invention Convention. Summer is arriving with momentum this week.

Best for families this week: the Ralph C. Bloom History Room Dedication at the library (Tuesday, free) and free Mat Pilates at Carpe Diem Café (Wednesday).

The Week in Norwalk

🐧 Puffins coming to Maritime Aquarium in new seabird exhibit -- The Maritime Aquarium will hold a ribbon-cutting on June 11 for "Seabirds Between Worlds," a new exhibit featuring live Atlantic puffins and common murres. The aquarium was named a USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice winner for the second consecutive year. Earlier this spring it welcomed Kaya, a harbor seal from California's Aquarium of the Pacific.

🔬 Reefs and student field trips among proposed ideas for Manresa Island -- A new consortium called R.E.S.A. (Research and Education Station at Manresa Wilds), backed by a $500,000 donation from island owners Austin and Allison McChord, is planning artificial reefs, Long Island Sound oral histories, and student field trips. Members include Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Maritime Aquarium, Wesleyan University, Sacred Heart University, and Norwalk Public Schools. Executive Director Jessica Vonashek said three institutions formed a new research collaboration within minutes of sitting down together on the deck of a 60-foot research vessel. The 144-acre former power plant site opens its first phase, Northern Forest, as a public park in 2027.

🍦 Norwalk kids headed to Invention Nationals -- Four Norwalk students are competing at the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. Eliza Zeidan, a fifth-grader at Naramake Elementary, invented the EZ Cone, an edible ice cream drip catcher made of rock candy.

🎵 Norwalk Community Chorale's 64th spring concert -- The 94-member chorale performed "From Wicked to Wonderful" Saturday evening at Norwalk Concert Hall, 125 East Ave. Free admission, conducted by Brian Muller with accompanist John Morrow. The program featured Broadway selections and music marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

💰 Norwalk schools seek $3.3M for teachers' health insurance -- Teachers voted 137-37 to stay on Cigna, whose premiums jumped 32%, rather than switch to the State Partnership Plan at 12.5%. The $3.3 million shortfall needs a special appropriation from the city. NFT President Mary Yordon said the union concluded Cigna offered more benefits; CFO Lunda Asmani said budgeting for the higher increase "would have required even deeper reductions."

Norwalk Business Beat

🎪 First-ever River Street Sunset Bazaar announced -- Norwalk is launching a summer market series in the Wall Street district: June 13, July 11, and August 8 from 4-8 PM. More than 30 vendors, live entertainment, lawn games, free admission. Director of Business Development Sabrina Godeski called it "a wonderful new way to showcase Norwalk's small business community." Parking at Yankee Doodle Garage, 10 Burnell Blvd.

🏢 535 Connecticut Ave. eyed for 96 apartments -- Ben Moss of Bow Tie Partners, a 100-year-old company, pitched converting the vacant six-story, 179,000-square-foot office building into 96 apartments, some affordable. It joins 35 approved at 200 Connecticut Ave. in January and 300 at Merritt 7 in February.

🏗️ Wall Street zoning pilot pitched to P&Z -- The Wall Street Neighborhood Association proposed slashing parking requirements and removing unit caps via a pilot overlay zone. A 2025 parking study by Redniss & Mead found the district's 1,700 public spaces hit only 48% peak occupancy. A petition backing the pilot has 150 signatures.

🍺 2 Norwalk bars cited in liquor inspections -- Surprise inspections found Azucar Sports Bar (17 Washington St.) with five minors inside and Public Wine Bar (88 Washington St.) serving after 2 AM. Eight other establishments passed.
