It’s happening!
The time is now! Cosmic Docks - my dance-theater trans-tall-tale one-them-show about orbiting the sources of yourself and searching for clarity in a broken world, which I’ve been developing on and off for three years - premieres Thursday, March 13 at 7:30pm and Saturday, March 15 at 1pm, at the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago, 1306 S. Michigan. And don’t miss Po’Chop’s THICK: a crumbling freak show, Friday, March 14 at 7:30pm and Saturday, March 15 at 3:30pm. Tickets tickets tickets here.
Straight up I think this shit is going to be extremely good. You should be there.
THE WHOLE SHOW IS LIVE CAPTIONED.
This show is not fully accessible, or anywhere close. However, one accessibility vector into which I put a lot of commitment (and why I’m currently fighting for my life to get my lines to 100% lol) was for the work to have live captions that are intentionally designed and integrated into the work and space as a whole (thanks to the incredible work of Projection Designer Ruby Que). I prioritized captions (and went with this option over employing an ASL interpreter) because I use an enormous amount of text, and because I have a lot of hard of hearing people in my life who do not sign. There are parts of the show that are improvised/unscripted, and those are not captioned, but the rest is! Thanks to Ruby, the captions look good as fuck and I’m excited for you to see them.
And for what it’s worth, although the work doesn’t include audio description, quite a lot of the core content is communicated through out-loud text or sound.
Ruby also made projection and captions for THICK. I haven’t seen Jenn’s work yet so will let them speak to the nuances within.
If you’re coming Saturday, prepare for St. Patrick’s Day Parade chaos.
The Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade starts very near to the Dance Center at 12:15pm on Saturday 3/15. How lovely that my show begins at 1pm! If you are coming Saturday, please make sure to leave extra time to travel, whether by car, transit, or bike. We will have coffee and donuts (well, the holes anyway) at the Dance Center lobby in advance of the 1pm show for you to take a beat and refresh yourself if travel sucked. You can also book SpotHero parking spots in advance - there are several still available near the Dance Center last I checked. Here is more info on parking nearby.
I need people for dress rehearsal!
If you can’t make it to the actual shows, but are free Wednesday 3/12 at 4:30pm, I’d love to have you at dress rehearsal, as I need some folks in the audience for it to feel real. Please reply to this email, text me, DM me, etc.
I still have comps available!
If you’d like to come to the main Thursday or Saturday shows but ticket price is a barrier, 1) feel free to use the code NORA for $10 off or 2) contact me about a comp as I still have some available! Very happy to share and want to have folks there regardless of ability to pay.
This show is NSFW.
Not throughout, not constantly, but at some key moments. You’ll be fine!! Who doesn’t need a little extra naughtiness in their lives as a respite from les horrors?! Just maybe don’t sit next to a family member who you’d feel awkward around if suddenly someone was in front of you talking about, I don’t know, gonad guzzlers and gushing poonanis or whatever.
Hit me up for hangs
We’ll be celebrating/after-partying Saturday night, and hanging generally throughout the weekend. On Thursday I think we’ll hang at a bar near the Dance Center. There will be a soft reception in the lobby at Columbia after Jenn’s closing show on Saturday, from about 4:45-6:45pm, and then gatherings after that. Details don’t go in the newsletter but ya know, get in touch and come thru!
Maybe I don’t have anything else to say
Which is a relief, honestly, because I say so goddamn much in the show.
If you’re still reading this, I hope you’re following the case of Mahmoud Khalil and keeping an eye out for actions and solidarity steps we can all be taking.
Read more here and enormous gratitude to Prem Thakker who is a good person to follow on this story and others.
One final BTS share for those of you who got this far
We loaded in the set pieces this past weekend, and upon doing so I realized that the original set design moodboard I made and shared with the Bluestem building team back in Dcember had honestly been achieved! Check it out if you so please.
And that’s about it, babes. I’ll give you the ticket link one more time. See you down at the Cosmic Docks.
