Trios and Sonatas!
Upcoming brin spotting in: COLORADO!
Hi all! I just found out that not one but two pieces of mine will be performed at the upcoming International Double Reed Society conference in Boulder, Colorado, on Friday, 29 July, 2022. Wow! The first of them is my oboe sonata, all the days of your vain life (an existentialist riff on a quote from Qohélet), which Rebecca Mindock and Doreen Lee will perform at 2pm. (Some of you may have caught their livestreamed performance of the same piece last fall — they really hit it out of the park!)
The second will be a special treat: A world premiere of Dances for Tangible Water, my brand new trio for oboe, bassoon, and piano, commissioned by a whole consortium of double reed players spearheaded by the Double Reed Dish duo of Galit Kaunitz and Jacqui Wilson. (For the performance, they'll be joined by pianist Alexandra Nguyen.) Dances for Tangible Water is a sweeping, evocative journey from the top of a mountain down to the roiling depths of the sea, and I'm very excited to have it finally brought to life by such fine players.
To my knowledge, neither concert is being livestreamed, but if recordings are available after the fact, I will link them here once I have them!
Further afield:
Plans continue to make a queer, Jewish reworking of The Merchant of Venice. Everything's a very long way from public performance, but things are slowly oozing forward.
In October, the rambunctious and claustrophobic tuba sonata that I wrote for Chris Dickey is slated to be performed. More details forthcoming once I have them!
As ever, I hope you and your loved ones are staying as safe as any of us can stay in such times. Maybe you can offer someone gentleness, grace, a place to rest this week. Maybe that someone will be you, yourself.
Til next time,
brin
