Radio Waves
Upcoming brin spotting in: FLORIDA!
Are you looking for some music to fill your Sunday evening? Tune in to WSMR Classical for their Modern Notebook block on Sept 4 at 8pm ET, and you'll hear not just a remarkable bass clarinet version of the second movement of my clarinet sonata, but also a really stellar lineup of other recent works performed by a luminous lineup of contemporary classical stars.
I'm pretty sure this is my radio debut, so I'm very excited about it and hope some of you can tune in!
New recordings for Bandcamp Friday!
Today is Bandcamp Friday — the day that Bandcamp waives their revenue share and any money spent on their platform goes directly to the artists — so what better day to check out a couple new albums I'm connected to?
First, there's Andy Hudson's halfway home, a roundup of contemporary clarinet works that includes the bass clarinet take on my sonata. The music Andy chose is wonderfully eclectic — there's really something for everyone, and Andy and his colleagues do justice to it all. (I'm especially fond of Cassie Wieland's hands.)
Second, Carrie Z has just released the soundscapes she created for the Zoom production of Insomniacs last fall! For those of you that missed this, Insomniacs is a surreal show about a polycule in Brooklyn plagued by insomnia and visions of the end of the world, and it prominently features a mirror that screams, murmurs, seduces, and otherwise makes a wide variety of unsettling sounds. Carrie's work took the show to another level, and I could not be more excited that these soundscapes are available for general listening!
And finally, of course, the world premiere recording of all three movements of my clarinet sonata is still up and chugging along. If you haven't listened to it yet, today's a great day to hit play :)
Ongoing projects:
I am deep in revisions for the Quality of Mercy libretto. Hopefully I will start setting it to music soon!
Concurrently, I am plugging away at the Shabbat and Festival Morning Service in the siddur. It is currently 1,459 lines long, and I am not even at the introductory psalms. (For context, the entire Friday Evening Service is only about 4,000 lines long.) It's gonna be a while before it's done, but I'm making good progress.
Be excellent to one another,
brin
