Welcome To Locally Sourced by Noel Rappin

This is my newsletter.

I don't quite know what this is going to be.

I have some things I'd like it to be.

I'd like it to have the same breadth of topics as my Tech Done Right podcast did. About coding, yes, but also about careers, and teams, and projects.

I'd like it to be a way to write about developers and developing and get feedback on the timescale of days and weeks, not months and years.

I'd like it to be a place where I can try some pieces that are different from the tone of technical book writing. I miss short-form writing and I'd like to get back in the habit.

I also have some good pieces from partially finished projects that are worth having people see them and I'd like to get those out in the world.

So the plan is that two or three times a week, I'll send out an essay. They'll be about 500 - 750 words, generally on topics of interest to web developers, especially Ruby and JavaScript ones. I expect that there will be groups of essays -- I'm currently working on a series about Agile/XP practices, for example. If I'm lucky, and a lot of people start reading these, we'll use Substack for some discussions, too.

I also expect that every month or so, I'll send out a longer post that's more of a specific coding example. These might be all over the place, but again will probably focus on Ruby and JavaScript. I'm not ruling out throwing in something like Elm or Smalltalk once in awhile, though.

Which brings us to subscriptions. Right now the subscription benefit is access to those longer posts, and possibly an occasional extra essay. The idea is that there will always be a lot of free content here — don’t feel obligated to subscribe (I’m very good at marketing). And, you know, encouraging me to keep writing these things. We'll see how this goes, and I'd expect some tweaking over time as I see what I'm comfortable with and what, if anything, can get people to subscribe.

Thanks for reading this, I hope this all turns out to be interesting, and useful, and fun.
