The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #235

A progress update on my self-imposed deadlines, a "bootstrapping a startup" workshop, and attempting to read for 24 hours in 7 days. 👀

Just Slightly Behind Schedule…

I really thought I was gonna make it this time.

I did get review comments out, at least!

And that has been a real joy:

A screenshot of a StoryGraph review of Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, rated four stars. Below the review, a reader named lalu comments that they discovered the book through Nadia and really enjoyed it. The comment has received a heart reaction.

Two StoryGraph push notifications on an iPhone lock screen, both showing that @abbie_ replied to a comment on a review of My Friends.

All I had left to do, to meet my deadline, was:

  • Add in a few new styles of news feed items to make it more interesting, e.g. celebrating goal progress and broadcasting public buddy reads

  • Allow users to configure which of their activity is published to the news feed

  • Allow users to customise what they see in their news feed (and allow filtering by users and muting users as a stretch goal)

  • Add in the ability for people to comment on news feed posts

So yeah, not much…

And, in true over-ambitious, delulu Nadia-style, I backed myself to deliver it over the weekend… 👀

Well…just figuring out the design for the new news feed styles is taking time. 😅

I think I’ve figured it out now, though.

Here you go. A sneak peek for my loyal newsletter readers:

Three StoryGraph community feed cards showing reading goal activity: nads setting a goal of 50 books, booksandtea updating a goal of 10,000 pages with 34% completed, and bookworm completing a 120-hour listening goal.

Two StoryGraph community feed cards showing reading challenge activity. The first shows nads joining The 2026 Genre Bingo Challenge at 0% completion. The second shows bookworm completing the Reading Around the World 2026 challenge at 100%.
Public challenges only, of course.

Two StoryGraph community feed cards. The first shows nads starting a buddy read of Piranesi by Susanna Clarke with three readers. The second shows booksandtea joining a readalong of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien with 120 readers.
Public group reads only, of course.

Two StoryGraph community feed cards. The first shows nads adding Beach Read by Emily Henry to her favourites. The second shows bookworm adding Babel by Barry Maitland to their To-Read Pile.
Don’t worry: To-Read updates will be turned off
by default on both ends…

I did have to address some performance side quests.

FINALLY the lag on long lists has been taken care of:

A screenshot of a StoryGraph roadmap feedback post titled "Slowness / Lagging when Adding Tags to Lots of Books/Navigating Large Lists". The post has 97 votes and is marked as Shipped. Nadia's comments from October 5th and 7th, 2026, document her progress fixing the performance issues.

A screenshot of an Instagram message from a StoryGraph user replying to Nadia's story about performance issues with long lists and infinite scrolling. The user enthusiastically reports that pages with more than 100 editions are now loading significantly faster, ending their message with "that bit seems massively improved!" A red heart reaction appears below.
@jennifermreads not realising this was an issue
until it was fixed was a highlight.

There were several issues tied up in this but the biggest causes for slowdowns were the tag form being loaded and updated in real-time on each pane and each pane featuring, like, eight different forms/buttons. Now there’s only one big form powering book list views.

So…I’m hoping I can finish off the Community pieces listed above over the next couple of days and get onto the buddy reads/readalong merge.

A screenshot of Nadia's development schedule for October and early November 2026. Community/Social work is scheduled for October 12th–18th, merging Buddy Reads and Readalongs for October 19th–November 1st, and a UI/UX upgrade for November 2nd–8th.
Sneak peek of my internal roadmap

Let’s Bootstrap A Startup

A highlight from the last couple of weeks was being invited back to one of my old high schools to run a workshop as part of their start-up academy.

Nadia stands behind a wooden lectern, speaking into a microphone while holding sheets of paper. She wears a white long-sleeved top, black wide-leg trousers and gold earrings, with her long, wavy hair falling over her shoulders.

Nadia stands behind a wooden lectern, gesturing towards the audience with a small black presentation remote. She wears a white top and black trousers, with a microphone positioned in front of her.

Nadia laughs broadly while standing behind a wooden lectern, resting both hands on its edges. A microphone stands beside her, and she wears a white top with black wide-leg trousers.

I’d run this workshop once before, virtually, and to adults, and as I was dusting it off and adapting it for the teenagers, it got me thinking: this is totally something I can deliver now and again as a paid service. 🤔

The title slide of Nadia Odunayo's presentation, "Let's Bootstrap a Startup from 0–1". The slide features large orange text on a cream background, Nadia's portrait, the StoryGraph logo, a landscape illustration and her social media handle, @nodunayo.

An agenda slide from Nadia's startup workshop presentation, listing Introduction & Objectives, Ideation, Customer Research & User Interviews, Building Your First MVP, Wrap-Up and Q&A. The customer research section includes preparing, conducting and synthesising user interviews.

So, if you want to hire me to run a 2- or 3-hour bootstrapping workshop, either virtually or in-person, where I go over everything from ideation to building an MVP, revealing the methods I use to build StoryGraph, then get in touch!

Free Trial Love

A screenshot of a Threads post by @leymoon_bezzoon praising StoryGraph's 30-day free trial, which requires no credit card and automatically ends without charging users. The post reads, in part, "What kind of Utopia is this?" and has received around 4,000 likes.

24 In 7

At the beginning of September, Abbie ran a readathon where the aim was to read for a total of 24 hours across the week. Abbie was off work for that week. Fair enough.

Now, I had no business doing this, but I decided to join in. 🤷🏾‍♀️

In what I would describe as personal growth, I said it would be irresponsible for me to attempt to complete the challenge, but that hopefully I’d read more than I otherwise would have done.

And I managed to read for 18 hours! 🙌🏾

A colourful, hand-drawn reading challenge tracker titled "One in Seven", dated August 31st to September 6th, 2026. The left side contains a grid of numbered squares coloured pink, orange, blue and purple. On the right, four mini challenges are listed: finish a book in one sitting, have a reading date with a friend, listen to an audiobook while crafting, and take yourself on a solo reading date.

Abbie then made the comment that she’d like to attempt it during a working week, and, naturally, I said: “Yeah, I’d like to join in on that!” 😅

And today marks the start of our lil’ readathon. 📚

But this time, I am much more prepared for it. I’ve kept my calendar clear and I’m condensing all of my working out to the morning and one location (the gym), foregoing my usual evening dance classes and tennis coaching session.

If you’d like to join us, please do so!

If you want to join us more literally, even for just part of it, you can:

  • Read for one hour from 11am-12pm BST on October 21st or 22nd

  • Read A Short Stay in Hell in one sitting (or during a walk on the treadmill, as I will be doing), starting from 11am BST on October 20th.

  • Complete a Flightradar24 Reading Challenge on October 23rd. Min time 1 hour, max time 4 hours.

Let me know if you take part in any of these. 😁

What I’m Reading

On deck on audio, to eke out more reading time during the readathon, I’ve got Jane Harper’s The Survivors.

A screenshot of The Survivors by Jane Harper on StoryGraph, showing the audiobook at 8% progress. The book is marked as currently reading and owned, with a start date of October 19th, 2026. Its tags include fiction, mystery, thriller, dark, mysterious, tense and medium-paced.

Have a great week,

Nadia
