The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #221

The proposed Q2 roadmap, sorting reviews, a feature in a top tech podcast, and a striking current read.

Roadmap Update

Q1 is over (fast, as per), and we’re six days into Q2.

Let’s see what the roadmap is looking like for the next few months:

A simple table with two columns labeled “Date” and “Focus.” Earlier entries are crossed out, including planning and “Monies: Giveaways + Plus.” The current highlighted row in green reads: “Mar 30 – Apr 26: Maintenance: Upgrades, Performance, and Bugs.” Upcoming rows include “Community/Social” and “Reading Together (Buddy Reads, Book Clubs, Readalongs).”

There are still several ‘2025 Roundup’ tasks not yet complete. I’m going to divvy up the remaining work into the relevant upcoming blocks, e.g. reading challenge redesign stuff when I get to my reading challenge block (not pictured).

I’ve already lost a week (and a day; today) in the current 4-week block due to travelling to NYC to visit my brother for his birthday. I planned to do a lot more work than I’ve managed to get done but such is life.

Now I’ve only got three weeks left for what we’re terming “Operation: Stay On Postgres” (amongst other maintenance tasks). Our conversation with Sean Lingren a couple months ago really hit home with how much optimisation we can still do with our current database setup. We might end up on distributed architecture again, but we want to avoid that for as long as possible.

Sorting Reviews

It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. 🥳

StoryGraph reviews page for Jazz by Toni Morrison showing “1.03K reviews” and an average rating of 3.93 with a rating distribution bar chart and a “2% Did Not Finish” label. A checkbox for “Only show reviews with written explanations” is selected. A sorting dropdown is open with options: Latest, Oldest, Highest rated, Lowest rated, and Most liked. A review card is partially visible below with mood tags such as reflective, sad, tense, and slow-paced.

More filtering options are on their way but the sorting combined with the rating filtering has already made our review pages so much more functional. 😎

Bonus Feedback

I received such great feedback on the trial bonus newsletter for paying subscribers that I’m going to keep doing them! 🙌🏾

WOW: Another Book-Inspired Workout

This partner workout was inspired by Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities, which I’ve not read. Would you recommend it?

Me and Jacinda in a gym take a selfie-style video, posing with peace signs and playful expressions. Large bold yellow text overlaid reads “WOW” with smaller text “(Workout of the Week)” and “A Tale of Two Cities.” The background shows gym equipment and industrial-style lighting.

If you’ve got a workout buddy, grab them and give this one a go. Can you beat our time? 👀

MKBHD WVFRM

Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD) is one of the most famous — if not the most famous? — tech product reviewers, and on the latest episode of his Waveform (aka WVFRM) podcast, producer Adam Molina named StoryGraph as his number 2 all-time favourite app. 🥹

YouTube video page showing a podcast episode titled “MKBHD’s Top 5 Apps of All Time!” from the Waveform Podcast. Two hosts sit in a studio with microphones and headphones; one speaks into a mic while the other looks down at a phone. The StoryGraph logo appears overlaid in the video. Below are engagement metrics including views, likes, and a subscribe button.
Thank you, Casey, for sending this my way. ☺️

What I’m Reading

I’m finally getting around to Omar El Akkad’s One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. A short but oh so mighty read.

StoryGraph book pane for One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. The book is labeled as nonfiction, memoir, and politics, with mood tags including challenging, informative, reflective, and medium-paced. The user’s progress bar shows 67% complete, with status set to “currently reading.” A button to mark the book as finished and an “owned” label are visible.

Have a great week,

Nadia
