The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #220

Our Giveaways platform has launched, a user on their way out becoming a paying member, new features, maybe new bugs, and a book-inspired workout. 🏋🏾‍♀️📚

Giveaways Launched! 🎉

Almost exactly 3.5 years after the beta programme began, our Giveaways platform is finally officially live. 🥳

As part of the launch I set up a proper marketing site for publishers and authors:

StoryGraph Giveaways landing page hero section showing the tagline "Help your book find its perfect readers" against a teal background, with a mosaic of angled book covers on the right side. Below, text reads "Improve your book's discoverability and reach engaged readers with StoryGraph's Giveaways Programme."
Two feature highlights from the Giveaways page. Top left shows a sample giveaway listing for "The Citizen of Eastport" by V.B. Ruth with book cover, metadata, genre tags, and prize details. Top right describes in-app prize downloads, explaining that authors can upload ebook or audiobook files for winners to download directly. Bottom left describes the "For You" feature that automatically surfaces giveaways to readers whose taste matches the book, with a screenshot of the For You section showing personalised giveaway recommendations.
Comparison table showing Standard (from $69) vs Premium (from $349) giveaway tiers. Both tiers include multi-format giveaways, in-app downloads, For You placement, and a stats dashboard. Premium adds homepage book cover display, Featured Giveaways listing, giveaway links on book pages and in list views, and a custom push notification to all non-winning entrants.

I need to create something similar for Plus one day!

From Considering Leaving to Plus

This was a fun journey:

Threads post by joshuaberwald in the Book Threads community asking if anyone uses StoryGraph, saying he likes it much more than Goodreads but feels like he's shouting into the void and wondering if he needs to switch back for community interaction. Post 1 of 3.

Same Threads post as prior image, now showing engagement stats: 1.7K likes, 596 comments, and 8 reposts. Dated 03/15/26.
Check those metrics. 👀

Follow-up Threads post (3 of 3) by joshuaberwald, 6 days old, tagging @the.storygraph and saying "we're making lots of new friends over here! Thanks for making such a nerdy and fun app" with a red heart emoji. 78 likes, 1 comment, 1 repost.

A reply from joshuaberwald, 4 days old, saying "This post has most definitely cemented me staying! I even went Plus because I want to support y'all" with a red heart emoji. 4 likes, 1 comment.

Distribution, Deletion, and Bugs

I finally launched the reviews distribution and filtering I’ve been working on for a few weeks now.

toryGraph review summary for "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin, showing the book cover alongside 89.6K reviews, a rating distribution bar chart skewing toward 4 and 5 stars, a 4.2 average rating out of 5, and a 3% Did Not Finish rate.

But in the process I seem to have introduced a bug — or maybe massively exacerbated a pre-existing one (still figuring it out…) — where users semi-regularly get frozen or blank pages. I’ve got soo much stuff to do across life and work but trying to resolve this is taking up all of my time at the moment. 😭

In other news, users can now swipe to delete notifications in our mobile apps.

StoryGraph mobile notifications screen on a teal background, showing two new buddy read comment notifications for "Project Hail Mary." The top notification is being swiped left to reveal a red delete button. Each notification shows the commenter's username, timestamp, and a "View comment" link.

WOW: A Book-Inspired Workout

I asked Jacinda to make me some conditioning workouts and she only went and named the first one after my favourite read of 2025. 🥹

A "WOW" (Workout of the Week) social media graphic titled "Into Thin Air," showing me performing a dumbbell overhead press in a gym, with the cover of Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" overlaid in the bottom right corner — combining a book-themed workout concept with fitness content.

This was extra special as Jacinda isn’t a book girlie herself, but she knew this would be a touching surprise!

Give this workout a go, especially if you’re a fan of Krakauer’s Into Thin Air. Details are in the description. Let me know how you get on. Can you beat my score? 😁

Extra Subscriber Emails

I’ve been talking about wanting to do more for my paying readers. I surveyed them a few weeks back but only got one response, so I decided I’m just going to start sending out an extra email in the weeks when I don’t send this one and see what happens.

I imagine it starting out as a more “dispatches”/bullet-point list-style thing and we’ll see how it evolves.

There are links at the bottom of this email to subscribe if you’re curious as to what I come up with! 👀

What I’m Reading

Hopefully finishing Jazz and moving straight onto Morrison’s Paradise to read alongside The Stacks Book Club.

StoryGraph book page for "Paradise" by Toni Morrison, labelled as Beloved Trilogy #3. Shows the book cover, metadata (318 pages, paperback, 1997, 55 editions), community genre and mood tags (fiction, classics, literary, challenging, dark, reflective, slow-paced), a custom "march-tbr" tag in orange, custom tags "stackspod-book-club" and "stackspod-ep," and action buttons including "to read" status, "remove from up next," reorder arrows, and "mark as owned."
The Beloved Trilogy is three standalone books but apparently there’s a loose connection between them all.

Have a great week,

Nadia
