The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #208

Birthday Week highlights, 10 weeks to go, the desktop profile page redesign, and a lot of reading... 📚

Birthday Week Highlights

Birthday Week was fantastic. 🤩

Here are a few highlights:

  • Cream tea at The Kensington. They gave me a glass of champagne and cake and comped the whole meal when one of the staff members there learnt it was my birthday.

A plate with two scones sits on a table set for afternoon tea. One scone is whole, while the other has been cut open and topped with jam and cream. Also on the table are a champagne glass, a teacup, silver teapots, and a stack of books, including The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe and Wonderful by Harry’s Baker.

  • Jacinda drip-feeding birthday message videos from my favourite trainers at my gym. They made me laugh, they got me teary…I’m so lucky with the community I’ve built there.

Two people in black tops smile at the camera in a brightly lit hallway. One is holding a phone, and the other has an arm extended.

  • Competing in my first ever fitness competition and placing inside the top twenty without my team training for it.

Four people wearing black athletic clothing pose together in front of a backdrop that reads “The Yard Games.” One person holds up a peace sign, and the group is smiling.

You can see us in action in the reel that Jacinda put together.

And thank you to everyone who sent an email telling me what they love about StoryGraph or this newsletter. They were awesome. ☺️

Feature Freeze

So, we’ve now entered Q4…

I have been telling myself that I’ve got three months to get everything done, but then I remembered that we’d said that this year would be different. 👀

A digital calendar for December 2025 showing a banner across Monday 15 to Wednesday 17 labeled “FEATURE FREEZE.” On Monday at 7:30 a.m., there is an event titled “Write and schedule newsletter,” and on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., an event labeled “HOLD: Yard Weightlifting.”
StoryGraph Feature Freeze: 15th-31st December 2025 (and probably a little beyond that too.)

Yup, no more last-minute deployments that might introduce bugs so close to our biggest days of the year. 😅

This means that there are only 10 weeks left!! 😱

(Looking forward to a more chill run up to Christmas though, typically my favourite time of the year.)

Since Last Time…

The desktop profile page redesign has been done!

Before:

A profile page on The StoryGraph showing sections for “Currently reading,” “Read recently,” “To-Read Pile,” “5⭐ reads,” “Owned Books,” “Tags,” and “2025 Reading Goals.” The layout is compact with smaller book covers and multiple panels grouped across the page. Progress bars for books and pages appear near the bottom, along with three circular challenge trackers.

After:

An updated profile page on The StoryGraph with a refreshed design. Sections are simplified and reorganized, with larger book covers and clearer groupings for “Currently Reading,” “Recently Read,” “To-Read Pile,” and “Owned.” Reading goals remain visible but now sit alongside stats, reviews, and tags, creating a cleaner, more modern layout.

This morning Rob sent me this post, which was wonderful as my goal is for everyone to think that the whole of StoryGraph is “SO pretty”:

A post from user Stells (@ofthevolsci) reads: “Storygraph browser display for profile changed and I was very confused for 2 seconds before going on to be very excited 😍 It’s SO pretty.” Below the text is a screenshot of a StoryGraph profile page in the new layout, showing sections for “Currently Reading,” “Recently Read,” “Favorites,” and “2025 Reading Goals.”

Someone has since pointed out to me that I forgot to include the covers of five-star reads. They weren’t in the original redesign, and they were originally removed from the mobile profile page, much to a lot of users’ disappointment!

Another big achievement of the last couple of weeks was granting giveaway hosts the ability to update their book listings, getting rid of a lot of manual work for Abbie. 🙌🏾

Italia

I’m going to be in Rome and Florence next week for a few days. If you have one must-visit site, attraction, or restaurant in mind, please let me know!

(Also if you know of a quality gym/CrossFit box where I can get my hands on a proper squat rack via a day pass in either city, please send details. 🙏🏾)

A wide daytime view of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. The ancient stone amphitheater curves across the frame under a blue sky with scattered clouds. Large crowds of tourists gather around the base, some taking photos and others walking past, emphasizing the monument’s scale.

What I'm reading

A book by my favourite nonfiction writer (The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe), September’s The Stacks Book Club pick (The Lilac People by Milo Todd), an audiobook memoir about a personal cold case (A Better Ending by James Whitfield Thomson), and a book I’ve been hearing about for years that’s got me on edge even though you know what happens from the beginning (Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer)… 😰

A StoryGraph “Currently Reading” list showing four books in progress. A Better Ending by James Whitfield Thomson — audiobook, 76% read, started Oct 4, 2025. Tags include nonfiction, memoir, true crime. The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe — paperback, 30% read, started Sep 24, 2025. Tags include nonfiction, crime, history, fast-paced, challenging. Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer — digital, 16% read, started Sep 30, 2025. Tags include nonfiction, memoir, sports, adventurous, sad, tense. The Lilac People by Milo Todd — hardcover, 17% read, started Sep 24, 2025. Tags include fiction, historical, LGBTQIA+, emotional, sad.
I’ve got all the formats going! 🤓

Have a great week,

Nadia
