The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #207

My birthday week, non-negotiable coding blocks, one million MAUs, and reading recs for a rainy day.

Birthday Week

It’s my birthday on Wednesday and so I’ve got lots of fun stuff planned throughout the week, including meals with friends and family, alone time (think cream tea and a hotel staycation), a dance shoot, a dance show, a fitness competition, a massage, and more! 😍

A white tablecloth table set for afternoon tea. In the center, a silver teapot with a curved black handle is surrounded by a sugar bowl, cream jug, and tea strainer. On the left, a small dish of butter sits beside jam. A plate in the foreground holds three golden-brown raisin scones, one split open. To the right, a teacup filled with milky tea rests on a saucer beside a silver-handled knife. A glass of water and other silverware complete the elegant arrangement.
The cream tea I enjoyed for my birthday in 2019!

Non-Negotiable Coding

Whenever I feel like I’m not doing enough of something, it’s often because I haven’t made space for it in my calendar.

Lately, I haven’t felt like I’ve been doing enough coding, yet I know that when I get at least three hours of focused software development done over the course of a day then I feel super productive.

So for the last couple of weeks I’ve experimented with having a non-negotiable, locked-in, three-hour block of coding nearly every day, no matter what else is going on that day.

This means I end up coding three hours a day minimum on days where I typically would have had 0-2 hours of coding.

A side-by-side calendar view of two days. Both days include varied morning activities such as newsletter writing and workouts, but each one reserves a solid three-hour Product Work block.
A lil’ snapshot of my calendar from a couple weeks back

Sometimes the day just doesn’t allow for three hours straight, so I split it up, but I’ve found that this approach works wonders, even though other things I’m normally more on top of — messages, emails, StoryGraph social media, life admin, etc. — get delayed.

This week needs some more flexibility as to when I’m going to sit down and code, but I’ll be back on it from next week. 💪🏾

1 Million Peeps…

…view their stats every month! 🤩

A line graph showing StoryGraph’s monthly active visits over the past 14 days, displayed as a rolling total of visits in the last month from each given day. The y-axis ranges from 0 to 1,200,000, and the purple line stays steady around the 1,000,000 mark with a small dip and rise mid-period. On 21 September 2025, the data point shows 1,040,994 monthly active visits.

Isn’t that such a cool stat?

Since Last Time…

…I’ve finished the mobile profile page redesign, made progress on the Librarian Log/Notes feature I’ve been working on for an age, and started work on giveaway hosts being able to edit information on their books.

A StoryGraph dashboard view with a dark background. At the top, the To-Read Pile shows 515 books, with six visible covers including The People’s Project, Green Dot, Exit Lane, The Gods of New York, Women, Race & Class, and The New Jim Crow. Below is the 2025 Reading Goals section: 55 out of 60 books read (92%) and 18,208 out of 27,375 pages read (67%), displayed as teal and purple progress bars. At the bottom is a circular chart for The Adeche.Atelier African History, Mythology & Culture Starter Pack, showing 14% complete (1 of 7 books read) with a 40% bonus.

I hope to finish the desktop profile page redesign before the next issue! 🤞🏾

A StoryGraph profile page with a clean white layout framed by a teal background. At the top left is the username “@yejjjtheuser” with a profile avatar, pronouns, and icons for roles. A bio placeholder text is shown beneath. On the top right, a horizontal favorites shelf displays five book covers side by side. Below, sections include “Currently Reading,” “Recently Read,” “To-Read Pile,” and “Owned,” each displaying book covers in rows with navigation arrows. On the right side, stats are presented: total books, books read this year, reading preferences, a progress bar for 2024 reading goals (books, pages, hours), and a reviews section with a bar chart. The design uses teal, purple, orange, and gray accents for progress tracking.

Rainy Day Horror Recs

A bunch of the Ask Me Anything videos have gone live.

Here’s one where I reckon y’all can help me out:

I’m sitting on a gym mat by the orange track, laughing mid-conversation. I’ve got on a fitted brown workout outfit, and my curly braids fall around my shoulders. Behind me, kettlebells and weight racks fill the space, with other people training in the background. The on-screen text says: “AMA while I do my rotation of tricks at the gym 💪” and “You’ve got a free, rainy afternoon. What are you reading?”

I posted it on Instagram Stories and got surprisingly few good recommendations.

What I'm reading

An hour left to go with Suzanne Collins’s Sunrise on the Reaping!

I’m 85% through Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins, listed as The Hunger Games #0.5. The StoryGraph page shows the purple and gold cover with a glowing mockingjay symbol, my progress bar nearly full, and the status marked as “currently reading.” I started the book on September 15, 2025, and the mood tags include fiction, dystopian, young adult, dark, emotional, sad, and fast-paced, along with my custom “sep-tbr” tag.

Have a great week,

Nadia
