The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #206

Brief thoughts on Amsterdam, V1 of Favorites, more automation, and an upcoming Ask Me Anything series of vids.

Amster-damn!

I spent Monday to Wednesday of last week in Amsterdam. It was my first time in the city and boy did I love it! 😍

What I particularly enjoyed was the chill vibe and how walkable it was.

A canal scene in Amsterdam under a bright blue sky with large white clouds. Sunlight beams dramatically through a cloud, casting rays across the sky. Several boats are docked along the water, including sightseeing boats. On the left, stone steps and a quay with people walking lead into the view. In the background, historic Amsterdam buildings line the waterfront, their outlines softened by the sunlight. The water in the foreground sparkles with reflections of the sun.
And all of the interspersed water. 🤩

Thank you to everyone who sent me recommendations for what to do. I’ve replied to you all, but I will follow up again shortly if I did make it to one of your suggestions.

An unexpected highlight was a planned coffee meet-up with industry friend, Joe Masilotti, which was disrupted by his jet lag, and ended up turning into a bookshop-hopping experience. He bought Station Eleven at my recommendation for his plane ride home and he bought me Tender Is the Flesh, which I read most of on the Eurostar home (and have since finished. I really liked it!).

Two friends, Joe and I, smiling and taking a selfie outside the American Book Center in Amsterdam. The storefront has bold blue lettering and a wooden entrance door. Behind us, the window displays books.

Unrelated, I was featured in his keynote at a Rails conference happening in the city just after I left. I knew I’d be featured as he had emailed me weeks prior to double-check his facts, but I was delighted to be sent this photo by Andy:

A crowded conference hall with a purple-lit stage. On the large screen, there’s a slide showing a photo of me smiling in a white top, alongside the text “Nadia Odunayo, The StoryGraph” and the StoryGraph logo. Joe is on stage presenting, standing to the right of the screen, while the audience watches attentively.

Since Last Time…

Every time I go away, I always have these lofty goals about all the dev work I’m gonna do and it never happens. I never learn. That’s okay.

I did manage to do a few things in the last couple of weeks though:

  • I finally finished V1 of the Favorites feature: Search, sort, filtering, and more!

A StoryGraph Favorites page. At the top is a search bar and an expandable "Filter list (11 books)" section. Below is a dropdown for sorting, set to “Latest added.” One pinned favorite is displayed: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab, with its red and black illustrated cover. Book details include 400 pages, published 2015, a 5-star rating, and descriptive tags in green, pink, and purple. A pin icon appears beside the title, marking it as pinned to the profile.
Don’t ask me about this book.
    I haven’t actually read it.

  • Performance Power Hour has been going strong. We made some queries faster, improved the performance of reading challenge prompt pages, and started working on the lag issue when scrolling through long lists.

  • I automated a Giveaways export task to help Rob automate the For You recommendations. All part of the whole platform eventually running itself.

A StoryGraph Giveaways page labeled "Beta." At the top right is a grey "Entries" button. Below, under the "For You" heading, four colorful book covers are displayed side by side: Love Me Tomorrow by Emiko Jean with a light blue cover featuring cherry blossoms and a violin, Days of Shattered Faith by Adrian Tchaikovsky with a black and gold illustrated cover, Beth is Dead by Katie Bernet with bold pink and dripping red text inside an ornate frame, and Hive by DL Orton with a cosmic swirl design in blue and gold.

  • We decided to shut down our automatic book importer. It failed a lot of the time and was a pain to maintain. Instead, we need to move towards a feed that publishers can push data to. (If you’re such a publisher, hit “Reply” so we can discuss your requirements.)

AMA

On Friday, we filmed an Ask Me Anything interview, based off of questions submitted via my Instagram Stories.

Jacinda has already put together the edit, and we’re going to be releasing the videos on a per question basis over the coming weeks.

The intro video has just dropped:

Nadia sits on a gym floor wearing a brown workout set with a light brown jacket draped off her shoulders and peach-and-white sneakers, one of which is off and placed nearby. She looks up toward the camera mid-conversation, with text overlay reading: “AMA while I do my rotation of tricks at the gym 💪 Keep an eye out for upcoming videos where I answer some of my most commonly asked questions 🙌.”

Premium Only Block

A simple wireframe-style design labeled "Premium block" at the top left, with a large empty rectangular placeholder outlined with a dotted line below it, suggesting space reserved for premium content.

I’ve just noticed that for my premium subscribers I can include a segment of my newsletter that only they have access to! 👀

Paid subscribers, if I started doing this, what would you like to see here?

(I’m still considering starting a paid subscribers-only forum space, but that’ll probably only come in 2026 at this point.)

Free Book Shopping

This post on Threads tickled me:

A Threads post from user @bookworminkayla dated 08/28/25. The post reads: "Just entered a bunch of @the.storygraph giveaways because it’s kind of like book shopping but I don’t spend any money and the book might never come." Below are engagement icons showing 67 likes, 7 comments, a repost icon, and a share icon.

Succession

After two years, a couple friends and I have finally finished watching the brilliant show that is Succession.

Promotional poster for the TV series Succession. A group of formally dressed characters stand on a glass balcony of a high-rise building, with the New York City skyline and Empire State Building visible in the background. The series title “SUCCESSION” appears at the bottom in bold white letters.

Feel free to email me with any/all of your thoughts on it!

What I'm reading

A recommendation from my number one bookfluencer, Traci Thomas: Between Two Kingdoms, by Suleika Jaouad.

P.S. You can now email me your thoughts about Conclave, the book and/or the film!

Have a great week,
