The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #199

A healing friend, a healthy mind, a moving body, and a few small performance and design improvements!

Life Is Better

Thank you for all of the well wishes after the last issue.

I’m delighted to report that my friend is out of hospital.

I’ve also been able to sleep in my bed again after three weeks on the sofa.

Here’s to an awesome, productive June! I’m feeling really good about it.

Since Last Time…

Amidst everything going on, I did manage to complete a few bits and bobs:

  • I’ve upgraded nearly all of the software that we rely on to the latest versions.

  • It used to take forever to load the Create Buddy Read page for popular books. Now the page loads immediately and searching for suggested reading buddies happens in the background (as it always should have done…).

  • After moving to a distributed database setup, the script that runs the giveaway prize draws started taking several hours to complete. It now only takes half an hour!

  • I’ve been working my way down the mobile profile page, implementing the new design:

A cropped view of a StoryGraph profile header and reading summary. At the top, there are badges for Admin (red) and she/her (grey), followed by five social/profile icons: Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, X (formerly Twitter), and a link symbol. The user is identified as the “Founder, CEO, and Software Dev of The StoryGraph.” Below that is a metrics card showing: An orange flame icon with 791 (indicating reading streak), 594 BOOKS read overall, 26 THIS YEAR indicating books read in the current year. The reading preference summary beneath states: “Mainly reads fiction books that are reflective, emotional, and dark. Typically chooses medium-paced books that are 300–499 pages long.” At the bottom are two buttons: a black Reading Journal button and a grey Stats button.

That’s all I’ve added in the last week — the stats box and the section underneath that — and I’ve been so shocked at the overwhelming positive reaction and the number of social media posts about it.

It’s boding very well for when the rest of the design goes live.

Moving and Dancing

I’m in the gym nearly every day and do a little bit of dance every day too, even if I’m not taking a class. It’s so good for me and it hit me some years back how all of my physical activity is probably a huge contributor in keeping me mentally healthy.

Today, I wanted to share a couple of pieces of content from this part of my world!

First, my friend asked me to try this fun challenge with her:

Video still showing three people hanging off of a bar. The text over the still says "First to take sweater off wins!".
My stressed face at the beginning cracks me up!

Second, I’d been working on perfecting this routine for the last few months and I’m so pleased with the outcome, especially as dancing in a pump heel is new for me:

Video still of me in a long-sleeved black crop top and red shorts and nude pump heels. My hands are crossed over my face and I'm looking out to the side.

What I'm reading

I’ve finally returned to my chronological read of Toni Morrison’s novels with Beloved, the only book in the challenge that’s a reread. (I don’t remember it at all though!)

A StoryGraph book pane for the book Beloved by Toni Morrison. The cover is a deep purple with abstract, flame-like branches behind black hand-drawn text reading “BELOVED.” To the right of the cover, the details read: 324 pages · paperback · 1987 Tags: fiction, classics, historical, literary, magical realism, dark, emotional, sad, slow-paced, may-tbr, and stackspod-ep. A green progress bar shows the book is 55% complete. It’s marked as currently reading, started on May 26, 2025, and there is a toggle to mark it as "finished." Buttons for "owned" and "buy" are displayed underneath.

Have a great week,

Nadia

P.S. You’ll notice I’m light on emojis this week. The default Buttondown styling is struggling today and in Gmail emojis take up a new line by default. 😭
