The One-Woman Dev Team Diaries #182

Apple UK's Black History Month campaign, immense excitement over a proposed feature, and an upcoming workcation! 👩🏾‍💻

“Black, British and Brilliant” by Apple

Remember a few weeks ago when I said there was a “fourth thing” going on but I “can’t say anything about that yet…”?

Well, the thing is out and I can now speak about it! 👀

I'm pictured sitting against a colorful backdrop of towering stacks of books, smiling while reading a large blue book. I'm wearing a blue dress, and the setting is vibrant and playful. This promotional image highlights my creation, StoryGraph, and offers advice on becoming an avid reader, with personalized recommendations to match any reading mood.

I was featured on the front page of the App Store as part of Apple UK’s Black, British and Brilliant campaign for our Black History Month.

They emailed me back in July, interviewed me early August, and there was a full-day shoot at the end of August.

In a busy makeup room, I'm seated in the center, dressed in a white robe, receiving makeup from one artist while another styles my hair. A third artist behind me captures the moment on her smartphone. Around us, the table is cluttered with an array of makeup products and tools, reflecting a lively preparation scene.

I’m so happy with how it’s turned out! You can see my highlights post on Instagram and read the full feature on Apple’s website.

I'm captured in a joyful moment, dressed in a bright orange long-sleeve dress, holding a large open book towards the camera. My hair is styled in long braids, and I'm smiling broadly against a cheerful yellow background. The scene exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, emphasizing my enthusiasm for reading.

If you’re in the UK, you can still access the collection from the front page of the App Store (I think it’ll be there for the whole of October) and see the motion video they produced!

Paused ASAP

One of the goals for this year is to release some of our most upvoted features on our roadmap, so that our users see that we do pay attention to what they want (if they weren’t already aware)! 😇

Top of that list is the Paused feature! So that I can hit the ground running when I finally start working on it, I decided to gather some feedback on Instagram, producing a super quick mockup in under a minute.

Queue our second most popular post ever, the most popular one being from the beginning of the year, when we had huge amounts of traffic and ended up second place in Books the US App Store.

Screenshot showing the Paused teaser post has 8551 likes and 948 comments.

I’ve never seen such excitement for a proposed feature. Better start working on this sooner rather than later! Can’t let the people down! 😅

AMA & Workshop

The recording of my DiscoLink Ask Me Anything interview is now live!

Cover image of the Ask Me Anything Session. On the right is the title of the vide: Bootstrapped The StoryGraph To Nearly 3m Users With Nadia Odunayo and to the right is my smiling face looking off into the distance.

The workshop I ran a week later, Let’s bootstrap a startup from 0-1, went really well. Much better than I thought! I went over everything from ideas that work well for bootstrapping to running customer research rounds, and we had a lot of live, interactive exercises and role-plays!

Title slide for my workshop, feature the workshop name, my name, a photo of me, The StoryGraph logo, and the DiscoLink logo.

Agenda slide from my workshop: Intro & Objectives, Ideation, Customer Research & User Interviews, Building Your First MVP, Wrap-Up and Q&A.

Slide from workshop: What Makes A Good User Interview? Or alternatively, what makes a bad one?

If this workshop sounds like something you’d be interested in attending, let me know as I’m considering running it a few times a year if there’s appetite!

Portugal Workcation

Next week I’m off to Porto and Lisbon for a solo workcation.

Do you have any good recommendations for places to work from — beautiful, comfortable surroundings, great coffee, excellent WiFi — or bookstores?

Also, I plan on a day trip to Sintra — any tips for that?

What I'm reading

The plan was to read through Colson Whitehead’s novels in publication order, but when I saw that Traci Thomas of The Stacks Pod had picked The Nickel Boys for this month’s book club, and that there’s also a movie coming out in a few weeks, I had to join in!

On StoryGraph, I'm currently 30% through

Have a great week,

Nadia
