#92 - Healthy Habits

Why some people use The StoryGraph every day, a new look and feel for the site coming soon, and why we had a mini spike recently!

Why do you use The StoryGraph every day?

That was the question I had the pleasure of asking seven customer interviewees last week in a bid to understand what healthy (hopefully!) habits we'd, inadvertently, cultivated amongst our most engaged users.

What was fascinating was how different each individual was, yet their usage of the product was almost identical.

They read every single day, and go into The StoryGraph to update their progress and then see how changes are reflected in the part of the product they are most obsessed with...
A line graph showing a user's 2020 reading against their 2021 reading. The 2020 line is light blue, and the 2021 is greyed out.
Ahh, October 2020. That month where I managed to read 11 books while still doing all my work. As you can see, the trend did not continue... 😅

The stats! Our most active users love the stats (and the reading challenges). 🤓

While recent product updates have enhanced daily reading tracking, we've not improved our stats dashboard for a while, despite having so many great ideas.

This is why I love customer interviews! They help you to figure out priorities when you've got a whole load of things to do and aren't sure where to begin. 😌

Our Plus users (and team members, hi Abbie!) have wonderful ideas too!

Since last time...

One of the things holding The StoryGraph back from realising its full potential is the look and feel of the product.

We have so many great features but sometimes our users struggle to find them or they put up with awkward flows to get things done.

I was hoping to be announcing an updated design in this issue, but it's been a slow, difficult, back-and-forth process getting to something I'm happy with and that I think people will love.

For one, choosing colours (and making sure they're accessible as well as pretty) is soo hard! 😩

While blue is typically a safe colour, in terms of design, this shade can make the site feel rather dull. 😔

A few days ago, we had a mini traffic spike. Turns out a very popular YouTuber, withcindy, launched the Asian Readathon 2021 and is hosting it on The StoryGraph! 🙌🏾

A screen grab of Cindy's Asian Readathon 2021 YouTube video. On the screen, at the bottom of Cindy facing the camera, mid-speech, is text that reads: "5. Read any book written by an Asian author that's not US-centric."
Overnight, over 2000 people joined the site because of the video!

In other news, we've noticed that, so far, about 7% of people are converting from the Plus free trial to being paying members (with 42% opting for an annual subscription).

Whether that percentage is great, good, or not so good at all is unclear right now, but it does mean we've gained 45 new subscribers recently!

Next two weeks

For now I just need to focus on the redesign and get it done!

Here's a little teaser in terms of where we're headed, produced by my amazing friend (and co-founder Rob's wife!), Saron Yitbarek:

An image showing a list of three book covers and their accompanying panes. The books stand alone in the left-hand column, and each has a white pane to its right. The pane features the book's title, author, moods, pace, bibliographic information, and action links.
Don't focus on the actual colours you're seeing here. They're rough imitations of the ones I'm actually using!

What I'm reading right now

I've picked up Njambi McGrath's Through The Leopard's Gaze as part of the Jacaranda Books #Twentyin2020in2021 challenge I'm doing with Abbie.
The book pane for Through The Leopard's Gaze. The book is tagged as: nonficiton, autobiography, memoir, challenging, emotional, and medium-paced. There's a progress bar indicating I'm 38% of the way through.

Have a great week,

Nadia
