#91 - Perhaps We're Not Far Off!

Maybe we're closer to product/market fit than we think. Also, our similar users feature is now live! 🥳

How well are we really doing?

I received some really helpful responses to my last newsletter. Perhaps we are looking at the wrong information to assess whether The StoryGraph has product/market fit or not! 🤔

No matter how mature your product gets, bits of media attention or viral tweets will always lead to short-lived spikes. What's more important is the proportion of people from each influx that stick around long term.

So, in a bid to gather this information, we finally tied down the definition of what makes somebody an active StoryGraph user and began to track usage based on this.
On average, 10k people out of the 12-15k who visit the site each day do something related to tracking their reading or choosing their next book.

While our main focus will be monthly active users (after all, the average person reads one book per month), understanding the behaviour of those who use our product every day will help us to learn what the most engaging parts of The StoryGraph are and how we can make them even better for more people to enjoy!

So, if you're a daily user of the app (or website) and would love to have a 20 min conversation with me over video, hit "Reply" to let me know!

Since last time...

"My News Feed is rather quiet...I want more people to follow!"

"Wow — that person's mood chart looks almost identical to mine. I wonder who else on here has my reading tastes."

The StoryGraph came to the rescue last week with the launch of our similar users feature! 🥳
Screenshot showing two users being looked on the similar users page. Each profile pane features the user's username and their profile picture. There are two columns on each pane. Each column features three covers. The column on the left-hand side is labelled "Recent reads" and the column on the right-hand side is labelled "Favorites".
Users have asked about setting their favorites themselves, but we automatically generate them based on who's viewing your profile and why you've been matched up!

We're super excited about the enhancement we've offered to our Plus subscribers: they can search for any type of reader on our platform based on genres and moods!

This is perfect for when you want to intentionally expand your reading horizons and discover books you've never heard of.
Screenshot of the advanced similar users page. There's an expanded filter menu. The first section is a genre selection box where "Horror" and "Psychology" have been selected. Then there's a mood selection, and 'challenge', 'dark', and 'tense' have been selected. There's a checkbox stating "I would prefer if they were as similar to me as possible" and this has been left unchecked. Finally, there's a search button. Underneath this, one user is shown. Their recent reads and favourite books look as if they fit the criteria searched for.

Next two weeks

Right now, we're sitting on a wide range of powerful features but a lot of users don't experience the full effects of them!

This might be because of poor design or a confusing workflow.

Over the next couple of weeks, while we dive into what keeps our most engaged users coming back, we'll be spending more time improving what we've currently got, making the product even more of a joy to use. 🤞🏾

Screenshot of the bottom of a book page on mobile. The pane at the bottom has a label that reads "Add to your reading challenges". Underneath are a list of three reading challenges that the user is a part of.
Adding books to reading challenges is definitely something that needs to be redesigned!

Also, the first Plus free trials have begun to expire so we're keeping an eye on how many people convert to being paid users.  👀

What I'm reading right now

This week I'll be picking up Chanel Miller's highly-acclaimed memoir, Know My Name, in preparation for a discussion with a friend at the end of the month.

Book pane for Chanel Miller's Know My Name. The book cover is shown, alongside the genres of 'nonfiction', 'feminism', and 'memoir'. There are also moods listed: 'emotional' and 'reflective', and the book is tagged as 'slow-paced'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
