#89 - On the roadmap...honest! Part 2

What it's like having a public roadmap, the launch of the "People You Follow" tab, and upcoming enhancements to page stats and progress updates.

It's on the roadmap...for real!

Last week I was interviewed live on a show called Ayo!.

At one point the host, Vicky Carmichael, said: "I see that you've recently launched a public roadmap. Isn't that scary?"

I paused, realising for the first time that, while it was a teeny bit daunting, mainly because I hoped people would be excited, and not disappointed, with what they saw, the overriding feeling I'd had since launching the roadmap was one of relief. 😅
Screenshot of The StoryGraph's public roadmap page. At the top are links to the three feedback sections: Features, Bugs, and Requests/Ideas. Underneath is the roadmap itself, with four categories on display: Coming soon, This week, Shipped, and Medium-term. Each section is a vertical column, with feature cards stacked on top of one another in each one.

Back in September last year, I wrote about how I felt like a broken record, continually telling people "It's on the roadmap!" or "Coming soon!".

This new public view means that a bunch of people who've been following along for a while now can see that we've really taken their suggestions to heart and we can respond to queries today with something more substantial:
A screenshot of a series of tweets. The first is from @orgbookclub asking @thestorygraph if a public API of sorts is available. The second is a response from @thestorygraph explaining how "There isn't one available now, but it's on our roadmap!". Then there's a link to a roadmap feature titled "An API".
And yes, we've had people ask: aren't you worried about others copying you?

To that we say: Ideas aren't the most important thing. The execution is!

The value from having this public, open space for our community far outweighs any potential 'risks'. 😁

Since last time...

The most exciting product update has been the launch of the new "People You Follow" tab on each book page:

A screenshot of the book page of Carmen Maria Machado's "In The Dream House". On the left-hand side is a vertical pane entitled "People You Follow". It shows that 25% of the people the user follows have interacted with the book. There are two reviews showcased, both showign the moods, pace and star rating given. Then it shows that two other people followed by the user want to read the book.
If someone you follow did not finish a book, you'll be able to see the reason why!

While popular now, we're looking forward to making it easier to find or invite real-life friends or those on other online platforms, as well as find readers similar to you, as then this feature will really shine! 🤩

Next two weeks

Rob is focusing on the next iteration of similar books and our recommendation engine, as well as V1 of the aforementioned similar users feature, where we hope to throw in a powerful add-on for Plus users! 👀

A screenshot from The StoryGraph's public roadmap. The title of the post is "Give users a way to find other users that are similar to them" and there's a comment from March 9th from user 'snslayer' that says: "Very excited for this feature! Not a lot of my friends love to read so I'm always looking for new people to talk to about books or get recommendations from."

I'm focusing on enhancing page stats and progress updates: add a note when you update your progress, have the number of pages read be reflected in your stats as you log them, and have pages read for books you don't finish still count towards your annual page goal.

There's a lot to fiddle with here but I'm optimistic we'll come up with a good solution. 🤞🏾

What I'm reading right now

I'm finally back on my chronological read of all of King's work! 🙌🏾

Have a great week,
