#69 - On the roadmap...honest!

The challenges of an always-changing roadmap, the sort options on the Browse All Books page, and upcoming work on duplicates and language preferences.

"It's on the roadmap!"

I'm starting to feel like a broken record and I'm hoping that our new users aren't tiring of me. Or worse — don't believe me! 😩

But when I respond to a feature suggestion saying "It's on the roadmap!" or "Coming soon!", it's 100% the truth.

At least at that moment in time. 😅

Here are other things that are 100% the truth — there is a growing list of things to do, especially as our user base keeps on rising (we're almost at 70k!) and, for us to build a successful product, we have to continually gather feedback and be prepared to completely shift the vision and our offering.

The list of features on the left is always growing...so is the list of bugs on the right. 👀

I always struggle to answer the question: "Are you planning on having....?"

How do I say "yes" but also "it's important that we don't really plan anything more than a week out, so no"? 🤔

It's not only startups where such an approach is incredibly beneficial!

Try and apply this to your next project, whether a personal or work one: seek feedback early and often, put off any decisions you don't need to make right now — you'll only make better ones with more information — and leave yourself open to stark direction changes.

So, please bear with me: it's on the roadmap, honest, but keep in mind that the roadmap is always changing in our bid to develop the most excellent books website for you. 😇

Last week

One thing that was delivered last week that I'm delighted to no longer have to say "coming soon, honest!" on are series pages! 🎉

There was another change that we hope will clear up any confusion between when a search on our site is tailored to you or when you're browsing through absolutely everything:

Safer then automatically showing you matching books and you thinking they're recommendations!

In other news, having no visibility into Rob's machine learning systems has recently led to either false alarms or me not waking Rob up early enough so he can deal with a bottleneck! Eeek!

So, he's gone and made me a snazzy new dashboard:

Fancy, right? 😍

This week

When we released series pages, it appears as if some users expected that we'd now have a more complete database and all of the duplicates would disappear...

...sorry, no. 😭

But I'll be taking a closer look at the issue this week. 🤞🏾

We do have a range of tools to tackle duplicates, but they find ways to continually sneak in!

There are books in a wide array of languages on the site. The vast majority of our current user base only read in English and so seeing books in other languages can worsen the browsing experience.

Soon (honest!) you'll be able to specify which languages you read in and you'll only see books in those languages whilst exploring the site!

The option will be added to our new Website Preferences page!

Be sure to update your timezone if you've ever had a book's read date automatically set to a day before or after the correct one. 😁

What I'm reading right now

I recently finished my first ever audiobook thanks to Libro.fm's wonderful ALC program:

US readers, click here to buy the book via our Bookshop.org affiliate link.

When No One Is Watching worked so well on audio  — I was intrigued and kept on elongating my chores so that I could listen to more!

Are you an audiobook fan?

Have a great week,

Nadia
