#65 - The Benefits of Beta

Discussing the reception to our app and the upcoming work on content warnings. And, what exactly is "Your StoryGraph"? 🤔 😁

The benefits of beta

To think that I almost didn't announce the app in last week's newsletter!

An hour or so before the email was due to go out, it was still consistently being glitchy on my phone.

"There's no way I can put this out there like this," I thought.

But then Rob reminded me of the value of being in beta: we are the very definition of test mode. People don't expect everything to be functioning perfectly.

And why spend time improving something if nobody wants it anyway?

On top of that, the way Rob and I were using the app was unnatural — we were actively trying to break it. Perhaps a normal user wouldn't even come across any problems with the frequency that we did!

Spot my new favourite app! 😍

The response to the "first draft" of this "not real" app was so overwhelmingly positive, with complaints and questions few and far in between, and the whole experience served as reminder that we are still in beta, tens of thousands of users or not!

We will always be a company that is customer-research led, but I've got to remember not to slip out of that "release early and learn fast" mindset! 💪🏾

Last week

We finally got "Ordered for you" working with 25k books, 5 times the number of books we were sorting through for you beforehand!

Pretty pleased with the way we made sure y'all got the update. 😌

The feedback we've received is helping us to design a new way to gather our users' reading preferences so that we'll be able to take the recommendations to a whole other level!

We also started data gathering for our next big project: built-in support for content warnings on books:

The Instagram post.

The response was incredibly impassioned, with many people sharing the post and stating that they hoped The StoryGraph's work in this area would lead to a new standard in the whole publishing industry...

Well, if that isn't a tall order! 😅

But, you know us — we do love a challenge! 😁

This week

Apart from researching next steps on the content warnings work, I've finally put together a vision for consolidating the Profile Page and the Your Books page on the website:

Stay tuned! 🤓

What I'm reading right now

Getting back to Ali Smith's Seasonal Quartet this week:

Have you read any of her books?

Have a great week,

Nadia
